Should I cut the root if it is root bound?

Soon I will be moving the plants from the pot to the ground. Should I loosen/cut the roots that are circling? Also I read, I need to plant Deep in to the hole so that stem become/develop in to roots. Is this applicable for all plant sizes? I have one plant that is 4 feet high in a pot. Rest are small 6" High. Thanks

I would just loosen them up a bit and push the ones at the bottom to the sides. There can be different approaches .

The roots are all healthy and pliable. I remember I was watching a garden show many years ago and the featured guest stated it's ok to cut very long roots as long as you keep 3 inches of root attached to the plant.It's probably just for plants and not orchids.With orchids it's all about the roots.Thanks again for your expertise. You should try growing a cattleya again.Get one that thrives in Jamaica.I'm sure the ones that grow in So.Fl. will do well in Jamaica.Try Cattleya Skinneri, it's an easy one to grow.When I started getting into orchids an employee at a local nursery recommended Catt Skinneri and it's still a favorite of mine. first.. i would tip it out of the pot.. and look ... if that failed... i would grab the trunk.. and gently tug... if it has roots... the soil will start to buckle indicating roots are down there ... resisting the stick being easily pulled out ... and if that failed... i would bare root it when the leaves turn color and fall off ... and find out ... and then repot it ... boy.. it made it thru the heat of summer.. holding leaves... one must imagine... there are roots down there ... i might give it a week or two before you do it.... its supposed to be 90s here fro me.. for a couple days ... ken

Dig up at end of winter, before top growth starts in spring and wash the soil off, make corrections. If the whole thing is going in circles - as is very likely - you won't be able to cut them all off close to the trunk. I'd try to instead pull as many of them as possible open, get them oriented away from the center. Sticks and rocks can be used to keep them in position.

Agree that cutting isn't necessary. You can just break them loose with your hands.

For the most part, yes all plant sizes. The 4' tall one - is that just the plant itself - will have to be trenched in in at least a 3-3.5' long trench. The 6" ones just bury the bottom couple of inches.

If they are extremely root bound I take a somewhat harsher approach. I rip off the roots at the bottom and rip the rootball open a bit to spread it out and rough up the sides. It will probably shock it a bit but I think it might be better long term. Unless you are very careful with a long bunch of roots they will probably end up going up instead of down anyway. I usually have a bunch of plants so I don't like spending a great deal of time with each one.

Believe it or not water can help loosen up roots. I would just dip in a bucket water and gently loosen the roots that way. That's only needed if it's really root bound though, which is not a good idea to allow happened for seedlings.
