Comments (28)Since the Wolf blue enamel issue has come up again, I will repeat a suggestion that someone (name missing from my text copy) once made on this forum responding to Weissman (msg 0409232327865). He said he obtained it from a service tech. It is a revised protocol for baking-in the Wolf ovens. I followed this protocol and have no flaking. However, my result is statistically insignificant. Further, while I can conjecture causes that may make the revised protocol helpful, such as giving the enamel an opportunity to conform to the expanding heating metal, I won't say that I have thought of any conjecture that convinces me. In any case, here is the suggestion. Wolf protocol: Run oven on convection roast for 1 hr. at 500F. Alternate protocol: Heat oven, run at temperature setting for specified time on convection roast, cool (door closed) to near room temperature, then repeat at the next higher temperature setting from cool. Temperature settings and times (minutes) that I used according to my notes exclusive of heat-up and cool-down times are: 250F/30, 350F/30, 450F/40, 500F/60. In favor of the alternate protocol, I see no risk with using it. Wolf's protocol seems to be intended to bake off manufacturing oils, so the need to operate at 500F is met either way, but the alternate protocol is a little gentler inducing differential thermal expansion. kas...See MoreOpinions for my 10k to 15k Kitchen Appliance Allowance
Comments (5)I am no expert, but here are my opinions. First, the BS (Bluestar) in a 36" in model will only be 6 burners and not 8. We have the 36" rangetop and it is just my wife and I and we are sooo happy we got the 6 burners 36" model vs the 30" 4 burner model. I saw if you have the space and money do it. Fro the vent hood, you are right don't skimp, get something that will work with the way you cook. You will need to do more research on here and other sites to get a better idea of what you should get. And honestly others on here are more versed in that area than I am so I will not comment more than that. Personally I say never get a "double" oven as there tend to be more issues with those compared to single oven's. That is not to say they are all bad or all have issues, just a general statement. If you want 2 ovens get two singles, or maybe a single oven and some sort of a combi or steam oven. I think you would be happy going either route. Or maybe think long and hard if you really need 2 and if you don't say the extra money to spend elsewhere. Lots of choices of fridges, and again not my strong suit, so read up there is a lot to learn about and then go and see stuff in person. Reading is good, but hands on is better. Bosch is a great brand for a DW, but don't rule out Miele if you can afford it. We love ours and both brands are great. Best of luck to you, and read up on here, lots to learn. Comments (48)Venting to the outside is not generally a code requirement as far as I can tell *I am not an expert*. Where I live, even a recirculating hood isn't required, so long as you have a window that opens in the kitchen. Induction/electric ranges I haven't seen any requirements to vent to outside, but for gas, there seems to be a bit of a question... e.g. if you have a "commercial" style range vs. a "standard" gas range. So, the code requirements *might* be different for different heat sources where phamm lives. Grease/fumes notwithstanding, I was wondering just about the code requirements for outside vent, as well the safety issue with gas. If there were more stringent requirements for gas, and venting to the outdoors isn't feasible, a move to electric/induction might be worthwhile. I realize however that outside venting *may* provide better removal of odors/grease... although I think a lot of that depends on the distance to the outdoors as well as the capacity of the exhaust fan. For what it's worth, the best outdoor venting I had was the downdraft. I think it captures the grease/fumes/steam before it has any opportunity to disperse. And it was a lot quieter that the over-the-cooktop hood I had installed for a through-the-roof scenario. I have no problems using a recirculating hood now, as they have improved a lot, I prefer to do my cooking in the oven, and I don't use very much oil in cooking... but of course that is not the situation for everyone! When my current smoothtop electric cooktop dies, I am going to go with induction :) If you haven't watched the youtube videos of people putting newspapers/paper towels on the induction cooktop, deep frying food, then throwing the newspaper/paper towels away revealing a perfectly clean surface, you might want to!...See MoreHow would you improve this kitchen for around $15K?
Comments (30)I would do 4 things with $15k: Replace all appliances (can be done with Samsung on sale for about $7k - there are major sales 4 times a year). Replace all hardware with sophisticated pulls in black ($300-$500 if you order in bulk) Replace granite on the island only with white quartz ($2k) Professionally refinish the island cabinetry with navy or dark color you love (do not DIY this step - $1k) the island will stand out and change the look of your entire kitchen. Total refresh - 10,5k give or take. It can definitely be done for that if you shop around. Bonus item - get counter stools from Crate and Barrel - I recommend their basque line made from mango wood - it will tie in well with your maple cabinets and make your island look like it belongs in a magazine ($2k unless you have an outlet nearby)....See Morenosoccermom
