Comments (33)The problem with that, berdnyz, is that the virus doesn't have to show to be present. That is how it got such a strong hold in the market. Infected plants can go years without showing symptomes, but all the time you can be spreading the virus if you work with the plant and other plants. The growers used the "visual check" to determine if their plants were OK - and dumped a bunch of virused stock into the market. In general, the reason prices are low at Big Box stores is they are buying inexpensive stock that has been mass produced and is much more prone, due to the way it is handled, to be infected. and somebody should talk to Phil - he'll be embarassed when he realizes he linked the wrong photo... he knows the difference between FW and Striptease! (not St. Paul - if you look closely you can see the tell-tale white stripes of Striptease...)...See MoreI found a couple of sports today....
Comments (12)Butch - my clarification of the 3 eyes is on the Woolly Mammoth plant. Photos #3 and #4. Photos #1 and #2 are indeed a different plant that I think may be hyacinthina, but I am not sure. So the 4 photos I posted: Photo #1 closeup of white centered green edged sport eye in an all green plant. Photo #2 is a whole plant photo of what I think may be hyacinthina with the white centered eye Photo #3 is Woolly Mammoth whole plant photo Photo #4 is a close up of the 2 streaky eyes in the Woolly Mammoth pot. THere are 3 eyes total in that pot as explained above. IS that as clear as mud now? Alexa...See MoreHalf 'Earth Angel', Half Undecided?
Comments (6)Thanks, Vanessa. I can't find any info on solid yellow/gold Blue/Earth Angel sports. Anyone know of any? I figure there must be something. A big yellow in this form sounds nice, though. Any sarcastic or condescending remarks from anyone in Michigan? Don B....See MoreGoing Sport Fishing!
Comments (37)Great idea for a post Jo! So very cool to see how much a sport can differ from the original, and everyone's unique finds. I never had anything sport on it's own until I moved and some of them started to do weird things at the new house. I was beginning to think there is something in the water here, lolz. Most of mine haven't unfurled yet but I have another new one doing it's own thing. I do not even know what this one is or was. A year ago, I spotted it in a friend's solid green clump and I asked her if she wanted me to save the narrow yellow edged (I assumed original) hosta for her, as there was only a few eyes of it. She said no... she wanted it out, it was always supposed to be green so if I got it out I should just take it or pitch it. I asked her if she knew how old it was or the name and her eyes just kinda glazed over uninterested in anything except me getting that hosta out. Cool beans, right? Well now it has an eye that came up, that I guess will maybe become a sport of a sport? And some of the thin narrow margins are becoming more prominent... but not sure if that is just typical as it matures. If anything, the sports and wannabe sports I have found are forcing me to have patience. They do their own thing, in their own time, and I just get to wait and see, But I enjoy them, regardless. I apologize for the awful picture... I am not so good with the phone pictures. I did get a decent camera so I can start trying to improve my skills once I start experimenting with it. Hopefully, I will be better by the time it blooms. Then, maybe I will post it for a possible ID, with a picture of the original plant to compare....See Moredon_in_colorado
