Something attacking hummer feeders
Comments (15)novice 60, I hate red wasps, their stings are so painful. I have an old Dirt Devil canister vac that the DW has tossed many times. The wheels are missing and it's held together with duct tape, but it's small and has a powerful motor, so I keep rescuing it from the trash. I use it to vac wasps from my feeders - they go in, they don't come out. Could be because I also use it to vac loose fur from my dogs. The noise scares the hummers away, so they're not in danger. If they do become accustomed to the noise and start getting too close, I'll cover the end of the hose with a piece of 1/2" mesh hardware cloth. Each wasp makes a new nest in the spring, so every one that you can get now means you're destroying a whole nest. Try it, it works for me. AND IT'S FUN!!!...See MoreBees keeping hummers away from feeders?
Comments (5)Are they honey bees or yellow jackets? We have problems with yellow jackets this time of year but during the spring we had a 'swarm' of bees for at least a week. They eventually left but we found if we put out a weaker mix of nectar the bees lost interest. This time of year we use the bee guards to keep the yellow jackets out of the feeders. The guards also prevents the surprise of YJ's popping out of the tubes when the Hummers go to feed! :) You might try adding 1-2 more feeders.........make a stronger nectar mix for the bees in one feeder and hang two extra feeders elsewhere in the yard, filled with a regular mix for the Hummers We have Anna's Hummingbirds year round so we have no fewer than 6-8 feeders to tend to. Come this winter we'll probably have 30 hummers to feed. Below is our favorite feeder, and in the winter we add the large sizes. Here is a link that might be useful: Best feeder...See MoreHummer/Oriole feeders in SE MN
Comments (3)I'm hoping to put my Oriole feeders (liquid and orange halves) out this week. The weather is so crazy, but I would rather be a bit early than miss the OrioleâÂÂs. I go by the weather for hanging the hummingbird feeders out. However, itâÂÂs usually by the first of May at home (twin cities) and shortly there-after up at the lake. Sandy...See MoreSurprise Guest at Hummer Feeder
Comments (3)I have been getting the male and female orioles the last two years (not Baltimore I'm west coast) however, I can not get a picture of them! They're too fast and I hide waiting for them. I love the orange/yellow feathers when the sun shines on the male!...See MoreOxonian .
