Where do SPIDERS go?
Comments (131)Jodik...For some reason, I find spiders on the stairway to the basement. Where it's dark. There's a closet at the bottom where Christmas and Halloween decorations are stored. The spiders love it down there. I'm afraid to remove ornaments for fear a spider will be in a box..lol On the other hand, in our front plant room, where it's bright, spiders make webs behind a large shelf, usually wall corners. I don't know if they're spider webs or or cobwebs..are they the same? Once in a while a baby spider is hidden in the corner walls. It's hard cleaning behind the shelf since there's very little space. The shelf is wide, about 2" from one side of the wall across to the other. Oh God, yes, this old house has many openings. Far too many. If I knew how to fix them I would. My brother lives in a secured Condo..last summer a bat somehow got inside. They believe it snuck in through their exhaust fan. Tropic..your friends are very kind-hearted. They'll be rewarded. We have a couple rescue shelters that take in injured wildlife..This organization nurses wounded animals then releases them in the forest/wooded areas after they're healed. How big was the crocodile? I don't know what feral Cane Toads are. Does Cane Toad look like most other toads? Warty, etc. Do toads bite? Is biting how toads attack turtles and get venom inside their system? The pen you constructed is inside your house? Wow..Cool. lol. Have a picture? LOL, turtle couldn't care less about your landscaping. Do Cane Toads live inside your house, too? If so, how do you keep them from entering the pen? Lol, wildlife allows you to live in 'their' home. lol. I'll have to Google, Butcherbirds. Never heard the type. Why are they called Butcherbirds? A name that includes butcher, well, these birds don't sound very friendly. lol. Millipedes might be harmless in the way of venom, but if a huge 'pede crawled on me I'd pass out. Oh, getting goose bumps thinking about it. lol. Although Carpet Python is colorful, beautiful in fact, I could do without..lol. Spying a CS at the zoo would be fine, but not living in the house. Tropic, what's with the snakes? If you don't mind me asking. Milking spiders..when a spider is going to be milked, espeially after agitating him/her, how does the milker near the spider w/o getting bit? Very dangerous career if you ask me..hope milkers have sufficient health care. Larry..Go to Nam..you'll find two-foot pedes. My dh was in VN..they came across a 2' 'pede. Don't know if it was a millipede or centipede, only that it was huge. Dh said, although the body was 2', its legs were about 4-inches. Where does one keep a 'pede that big? lol. Toni Yuck..the delivery spider truck driver delivers a quart of leggy creatures. lol....See MoreBest Solution for Spider Mites
Comments (13)I haven't posted in a long while, but admittedly, this is a subject that is unfortunately dear to my heart. For a couple years now I have gotten hit pretty hard with mites. Like real hard. Hard to a point where ALL the leaves turn yellow and fall off. Not all at once but within a matter of 1 week I've had brugs and other perennials like honeysuckle go from being lush and green to yellow, spindly and sick. Here in central CA it can happen and happen fast. This year I vowed to stay on top of things. I sprayed neem every 5 days. I sprayed Bt once a week to prevent worms. I was so pleased that again this summer that a good 'crop' of praying mantis were out and about enjoying their feasts. ---I realize the mantis's actually do not prey on mites - but I'm pleased that their presence along with the lacewings are the healthy by-product of an 'organic' approach. Well, given that technically neem shouldn't be used in direct sunlight and/or in temps above 80, that was literally impossible to uphold seeing that our low nighttime temps recently have not been below 90. So, in an effort to squelch the mites, I sprayed neem as late (or early) as possible and now I'm afraid I could have lost 2 brugs. Both have lost every leaf and they're turning brown at the tips. This is horrible! I want to say that neem and other organic measures are the way to go, also, but I'm afraid that in some cases of extreme or sustained dry heat, it just doesn't work. I've tried the spraying water thing, too. Getting a water ticket is not a good option. I have now ordered Avid which is a miticide that apparently is very, very popular on the Rose forums. It's not cheap, but I'm literally desperate. It's supposed to have very low phytotoxicity and it does not hurt beneficials. This really is important to me, hence probably why I've continued to try for so long without succumbing to more toxic methods. I'm going to see how the Avid works. Mites here in central CA are the bain of my gardening experience!...See MoreHELP! I have spider mites!
Comments (33)Ok, I am confused...Are you sure it is a spider mite you saw? I have never seen one without a magnifying glass, and most people I know of can't see them with the naked eye until it's too late and they have already begun to spin their webs. Can you take a picture of it just to make sure it is a mite for us to see. If you can see them, then maybe we can? All I do is use a good safer or insecticidal soap, making sure to soak every crevice and under the leaves for a period of a month once week, being consistent is the key, and they are usually gone by spring or at least kept under control for the duration of winter. Oils can tend to discolor certain leaves of certain succulents which I am leery of, but which works like magic on all my other plants. I do know that most chemical systemic control products only cause an explosion in mites. I found that out the hard way and never again. Good luck Mike:-)...See MoreHELP. Lots of spiders in my house. Comments (107)And this is what spider looked like after I killed it... more like screamed for my mom to come downstairs and she after about 5 minutes of attempting to squish it finally succeeded and it moved around alot and fast kept crawling up and down on fireplace mantle.... while she tried stabbing it with a pool stick from the old pool table near by... and told me she cant do it was afraid to get a shoe or something to get close to it I yelled I am moving out today if we don't kill this now ! Lol finally we got an idea and sprayed it with some kitchen cleaner and it slowed down long enough for her to kill it . Wish I had better pics but was so freaked put when I saw it I only snapped the one very quickly just in case I lost it before it had a chance to be killed and only have the phone photo of it dead to try to help identify it.. I been reading thru a lot of thread like these I know this one is old and I've been rambling quite a bit but hope someone takes time to read and respond.......See Moreewwmayo
