If you just planted this tree a week ago, you must have bough tit with peaches already on it. The tree is naturally aborting the fruit because the tree cannot establish itself and carry fruit at the same time. Remove any fruit that's on it and let the tree acclimate to its new climate and surroundings. Then you can let it fruit next year. In the meantime, you can educate yourself on how to grow peaches. There's plenty info on line

darn! thanks rayrose sc8. obviously thats why I got tree,because it had peaches already. seriously all remaining peaches need to go? there are probably 20-30 peaches on it. what do I need to spray to protect tree as is, anything? or is my issue ss u said, totally acclimation issue?

Do you want 1 peach this year or 50 peaches in 2 years?

You should never let any fruit tree fruit for at least 2 years. It's job should be to grow roots and branches.

oh ok. cant get anymore straight forward than that. I will pull all peaches then and wait for couple years to expect peaches. my question now is...do I pull young peaches next year(2nd year) as well?

Yes. And if your patient year 3 too. After that let it do its thing and enjoy. Your crop for years 4 and 5 will be higher than 1-5 if you let it fruit. All because the trees would have significant root and leaf mass that it wouldn't if it spent too much energy on fruiting early.

You can leave a few on the tree next year. I have a peach that I let bear a full crop on it's 2nd year (I did thin the tree). It's going into year 5 and fruiting like gangbusters. I have to summer prune the tree to keep it in control and have more peaches than I can deal with.

wow, summer prune! sounds like you are putting some peaches on if you have to do that. im not very patient, its going to kill me to pull all of these off this year but it definitely sounds like the right thing to do as I was informed.

Of course it can be done. But it's not the best option. Letting the tree focus strictly on establishing always results in a bigger harvest overall for the first 5 or so years.

If you have a colder winter than normal, warmer summer, or dryer periods than normal you would be glad you had as many roots and branches as you can.

Its always a personal choice but there is a reason the horticulture people recommend not letting trees fruit til year 3.

I understand totally PIP, BUT HECK I JUST BEAT CANCER TWO YEARS AGO,FIRST WAS TOLD HAD 2-3 yrs left, HAD TWO STENTS PUT IN MY HEART THIS YEAR, MAN IF I WAIT FOR YEAR THREE , I MAY HAVE TO TRY SOME OF THE LORD'S PEACH PRESERVES...LOL

Hey if your "time limited" then yeah enjoy what you can while you can. I'm only 30 so my goals are long term tree health and yeild. So what works for me isn't what will work for you.

It depends on where you are at. If you have a long growing season and a vigorous root stock, there is no harm in letting the tree have 2 or 3 peaches the first year if the branches are big enough to support the ripen fruit. Get a small yield in year three, thinning to 6 inches, again on bigger branches. In SE Texas my first year trees can grow 6 to eight feet of new growth, big enough to support fruit in second year.

That peach looked like it was also damaged by stinkbugs. Next year, you will need to spray insecticide or with kaolin clay called Surround to protect your fruit as early as right after petal fall. Captan is fungicide, not insecticide.

In the n2nd year of growing, you can let peach fruit a few, depending on how well your peach grow and establish this year. By year 3, you'll be able to let more fruit.

Peach flower and fruit very early and a lot. That's why thinning is a must.

very good call. I killed a stink bug on a peach. knowledge is keen. do I not need to spray insectiside now? is that solely after petal fall time to do it?

There's also the option of bagging the peaches at thinning time to protect them from insects, instead of spraying them.

i agree with removing the peaches this year, but I'd leave a few next year. If it puts all its energy into growth, that's just more pruning to do.

I'm a peach newbie, too - I planted a Galaxy peach last year. This year, it actually has blossoms. Do you recommend pinching off the blossoms until year 4 or just pulling off the fruit itself?
