Name That Plant!

Seedling ID please

Please help me ID the bigger seedling. Not sure what the smaller seedling either but I'm guessing it's too small to ID. I googled CA poppy seedlings because I thought the bigger one could be poppy. But it doesn't look exactly like a poppy seedling. What do you think?

Definitely not Eschscholzia. Maybe a Cosmos? What sorts of things did you sow?

Hopefully this will help. Basically I had a number of flower seed packets really out of date. I put them in Mid-May around the bigger established plants already there. So now IÃ¢ÂÂm wondering if its weeds or the flowers finally coming to life. The pattern of them is consistent with where I put the seeds and the plants seem pretty much all of the same type, coming up at the same time. Alternatively of course, they could be really uniform and well spaced weeds, and IÃ¢ÂÂm just being ultra-hopeful! Thank you for your help guys.

If you have room, transplant it and observe it for a while. Might be the next big thing! ...especially if seed came from one of the more diminuitive cultivars like Teddy Bear or Little Gem.

I agree. Nice native and pest-free tree in the right location. Often found in old fence rows and hedgerows as it makes a living fence. Part of the Mulberry clan and like the mulberries, it has colorful roots. Osage roots are orange if I remember correctly. FataMorgana

My neighbor has a pin oak but I don't think it's mature enough to produce acorns, I've never seen acorns anywhere in the neighborhood. I have what is possibly quercus nigra growing up through another tree on my property. Sadly I live in a typical NC development which is mostly crepe myrtle, pines, and maples. I would love to keep these guys going, although I gather that if they are water oak they're not desirable. One of them is in the middle of the "lawn" (bermuda). If I fence it off will it have a fighting chance or will the bermuda eventually choke it out?

I didn't sow anything. It's a volunteer. I had CA poppy and marigold last year. No cosmos.

I know this is an old thread, but I have the same seedlings popping up all over my (new to me) yard and I'd love to know what yours ended up being. Please reply if you're still on here! I thought CA poppy, but like you, they don't quite match. Someone else suggested marigold on my gardening forum, but i don't see that, either.

Tastie, if it's marigold the foliage will have that distinctive smell when bruised. It's not Californian Poppy.
