Spring has Sprung in SF Bay Area
Comments (10)Pip Pip Hooray! Thank you Babka......guess it is time for me to do some checking of tipped pots.....but man, it is still cold and very wet here. I'm afraid I might lose some to crown rot since this winter was so wet. My first Hosta Spring was 2012, and many pipped in February, my Satisfaction NOID bloomed in early April. Would you be so kind as to show me your Snake Eyes when it pips? I'm waiting for mine to ship from Hallson when the ground thaws up in Michigan. Hope it looks as wonderful as your Snake Eyes did last season. I know you use square wood lengths to lift up your pots on the deck and stadium seating, but with me it will be 2x2s on the cypress mulch and perhaps some special stadium seating similar to what Paula built in Jacksonville FL. And maybe smaller pots a la Hampshire Hanging Gardens suspended from the wooden fencing. Anywhere I can find shade and good air circulation, that's where I'll be hosta gardening. Somehow I get the feeling this will be a different experience with my hosta. I've even discovered a hosta nursery near Birmingham....which means a 200+ mile roadtrip (one way) is in order this spring. Not a wide selection, but perhaps I can acquire some relatively mature specimens. What a thrill that would be!...See MorePips in Z5
Comments (3)Wow, Steve, that's farther along than many of mine here in zone 7a! But today we had June-like temperatures, so they are on the fast track now. I had some astilbe and bleeding hearts pop up where I had forgotten them, too. I guess those "surprises" are the silver lining for distracted gardeners like myself!...See MoreYa-ha! Gypsy Rose finally pipped!!
Comments (5)MOCC: Well, MY Gypsy Rose has QUITE a ways to go to look as beautiful as yours. Mine is only a tiny pip as of now. Remember Me is just stunning right now, with at least 6" of banana yellow leaves out. Rainbow's End is sending up lots of leaves as well. The little minis in my 18" ceramic pot are coming along. I love the contrast between the chartreuse Appletini and Cracker Crumbs and the foamy burgundy of the heuchie Frost. I just went out to Westbury, Long Island to visit the famous Hicks nursery. They are awesome, but you have to rob a bank to pay for stuff! I bought some anti-SQUIRREL granules and have already applied them. And I bought a 3-plant pot of 3 different colors of calibrachoa to keep my Easy Does It rose company. I stopped off at my local Home Depot on the way home to pick up some Windex for my windshield. On the way to the register, a soft burgundy and yellow Crazytunia (Anyone see these? They're new this year) was calling out for me to rescue it from the clutches of the negligent Home Depot staff, who must be related to the "landscape workers", such is their skill at keeping the plants there alive. As I took it into my arms, a 6-pack of bright yellow French marigolds cried, "Me, too! Me, too!" So I succumbed to their siren call. As soon as I got home (it was already dark), I doffed my purse for my trowel and planted the Crazytunia at the front corner of my garden, to keep Raspberry Sundae company. I planted 5 of the little French marigolds around one side of my Easy Does It rose, and the 3 mixed calibrachoas around the side facing the strawberry pot. Dat's all, folks. Now, just waiting for Blue Jay, Cameo, & heuchies Ginger Snap and Sweet Tart. BTW, my neighbors all think I'm a bit nuts when they see me planting stuff at night, as though it were some sort of CIA operation. Let 'em wonder......See MoreYEA PIPS!!!!!!
Comments (25)Some signs of Spring here. Deer wandering around the yard at 1 AM. Tracks all over in the patches of snow left. The sounds of geese heading over to the pond which is still not accessible with one large puddle blocking the path on one side and the other way completely flooded all along. Anxious to see the pond and feeder stream as I think they must be overflowing their banks. No need for thermals anymore as it gets just under freezing in the AM. Rabbits and squirrels all over and birds migrating back....but zero sign of any pips. Sandy, I'm sure that things will explode when we get into the fifties and stop freezing each night.
