Pip-pip-pooray!
Comments (6)Yes, MOCC, I see more pips (Raspberry Sundae, Paradise Island) BUT we also had a terrible rainstorm last night ending in HAIL & SNOW. I am worried that the pips were damaged by the cold. The night time temps hit 32 degrees for an hour or two. The pips seemed OK this morning, but damage may have occurred to them. AND, some Darned Squirrel uprooted entirely one of my hostas. I don't know which one, because the I.D. stake was missing. I found the hosta roots barely covered by soil plus the non-pipped top of it, all on top of the soil. I hastily toed out a hole and put the hosta in it with my shoe, gently. Then I kicked soil over it. You are not allowed to garden during Passover, but you could make a rough save of a plant like I did. I am worried that, without soil cover, the hosta will have been damaged by the cold. The roots were certainly moist after the rain deluge hour after hour. I had to walk to my host's for the seder in that deluge, quite a nice long walk. I wore my head-to-ankles LLBean raincoat with a warm fleece jacket under that, which sufficed to get me from Point A to Point B and back again without getting soaked or frozen. I was more worried about my hostababies and the snow!...See MorePips in Z5
Comments (3)Wow, Steve, that's farther along than many of mine here in zone 7a! But today we had June-like temperatures, so they are on the fast track now. I had some astilbe and bleeding hearts pop up where I had forgotten them, too. I guess those "surprises" are the silver lining for distracted gardeners like myself!...See MoreYa-ha! Gypsy Rose finally pipped!!
Comments (5)MOCC: Well, MY Gypsy Rose has QUITE a ways to go to look as beautiful as yours. Mine is only a tiny pip as of now. Remember Me is just stunning right now, with at least 6" of banana yellow leaves out. Rainbow's End is sending up lots of leaves as well. The little minis in my 18" ceramic pot are coming along. I love the contrast between the chartreuse Appletini and Cracker Crumbs and the foamy burgundy of the heuchie Frost. I just went out to Westbury, Long Island to visit the famous Hicks nursery. They are awesome, but you have to rob a bank to pay for stuff! I bought some anti-SQUIRREL granules and have already applied them. And I bought a 3-plant pot of 3 different colors of calibrachoa to keep my Easy Does It rose company. I stopped off at my local Home Depot on the way home to pick up some Windex for my windshield. On the way to the register, a soft burgundy and yellow Crazytunia (Anyone see these? They're new this year) was calling out for me to rescue it from the clutches of the negligent Home Depot staff, who must be related to the "landscape workers", such is their skill at keeping the plants there alive. As I took it into my arms, a 6-pack of bright yellow French marigolds cried, "Me, too! Me, too!" So I succumbed to their siren call. As soon as I got home (it was already dark), I doffed my purse for my trowel and planted the Crazytunia at the front corner of my garden, to keep Raspberry Sundae company. I planted 5 of the little French marigolds around one side of my Easy Does It rose, and the 3 mixed calibrachoas around the side facing the strawberry pot. Dat's all, folks. Now, just waiting for Blue Jay, Cameo, & heuchies Ginger Snap and Sweet Tart. BTW, my neighbors all think I'm a bit nuts when they see me planting stuff at night, as though it were some sort of CIA operation. Let 'em wonder......See MoreThey are 'eyes' not pips
Comments (33)Well, this is a bit embarrassing. Up above I wrongly identified my eyes/pips/short shoots? as Sagae. Not Sagae, it's a smaller hosta, Blue Cadet. When the roofers were here in fall they kicked around plant markers and Sagae's was laying in front of BC. Today I found Sagae a little bit farther over making a valiant effort to push up shoots where a big rock was moved on top of it! I hope I never have to go through re-roofing again. I have a lot of markers laying around or just gone. :( I shouldn't complain too much because at least I do have spring, which a lot of you are still waiting for. A lot of my hostas are showing, but not all yet. I've never had forsythias bloom for such a long time. They're gorgeous this year. Even my butterfly bushes (Buddleia davidii) are leafing out....See Moresherrygirl zone5 N il
