Wekiwa Tangelo and Meiwa Kumquats
Comments (8)Patty: I cannot eat even 10% of the fruit I grow. That is why I make a lot of juice. Wekiwa is a fantastic fruit for citrus juice blends. It also gets sweet before most other citrus in this area. Blend #1, grapefruit juice of your choice + enough Wekiwa to make it sweet. Or use Minneola instead of G.F. Blend #2 (juice about equal ammounts of each) Page + Clementine + Nova/Fairchild + Fortune + Wekiwa. This blend of flavors is like so; rich + aromatic + balanced-sweet + tart + Wekiwa (smoothing them togeather). Fortune is the wild card here. Some years it is tart like a Minneola, others it is more like Nova. For aromatic, substitute any Clemintine or Ponkan group. For balanced-sweet, use any other ClemxOrlando hybrid (Bower,Robinson,Lee,Etc.)except Bell (unless Bell is very ripe it is more tart). Another balanced-sweet group is the KingxMediterranian hybrids like Kinnow. If you don't have Wekiwa use Satsumas or round oranges. Be creative, blood oranges and red navels also work instead of adding the tart component, adding a new level of complexity (berry flavor instead of citric acid ). Patty, it looks like you are almost there. Five years from now, when each tree is loaded with fruit, you will be so happy to make all the blends you can dream up....See MoreHelp me with my Meiwa Kumquat Tree
Comments (2)The speckled leaves are typical of spider mite damage. These are tiny insects which can often only just be seen without a magnifying glass. Try a close inspection, particularly underside of leaves. Regular spraying from a fine but high-pressure hose will knock off many of the insects, but to eliminate them you will need to use a horticultural oil spray or a chemical miticide. Check what is available locally....See More9 Meiwa kumquat trees from seed
Comments (49)I placed my kumquat seeds between to pieces of damp paper towels in a zipper food bag and placed over my heater duct outlet. Others I planted in potting soil wit a lid over the container and placed inside one of my heating ducts. Both ways took about a week. My last set of 80 meiwa seeds all rotted. Meiwa kumquats are very hard to start. Today I ate my last 2 Meiwa kumquats and saved 10 seed to through outside in the 20F snow. I am not wasting any more time sprouting Meiwa seeds. Its a lot of work. Steve...See More5 one year old seedling Meiwa kumquat trees starting 2018
Comments (44)The fruitless under the can light Meiwa has finished its growth spurt with a total of 44 linear inches of new twigs with fresh leaves. It is now tied for the second biggest of seed grown Meiwa kumquat trees I picked the fruit off the other Meiwa tree at half ripe and the skin was sweet and the flesh was very juicy but not much flavor in sweet or sour. I was afraid a mouse would get it and it was the only fruit from a seed grown tree. I also picked all the much ripper fruit from my grafted meiwa and the fruit was sweet skinned with semi sweet tart flesh. very much worth eating. This will actually be the last entry for this thread from Me and I will continue this discussion in "4 seed grown 2 year old Meiwa kumquat tree for year 2019". I will leave a link to the new thread when I start it. forget what I said above. I did not expect this much change in one of the trees. Steve...See MoreBarbJP 15-16/9B CA Bay Area
