New house, how can I fix/make the lawn thicker?
Comments (1)If you showed them a picture of that and they told you it was Marathon, I would take that as a clue and never visit them again. This is a coarse bladed grass with a light green color. Marathon is a fine bladed grass with a deep green color. From here that appears to be St Augustine. It is very shade tolerant, in fact it almost needs a little shade to really thrive. You cannot get St Augustine seed. It spreads about 10 feet per year, so you don't really need seed once you have a little bit of it. Before I can tune up your practices, I need to know what you've been doing. There's no sense spending a lot of time telling you things you already know. Where do you live? (SoCal is a diverse place ranging from Indio to Lake Arrowhead to Palmdale to San Clemente. And don't say, LA, because nobody lives in LA. You have to be pretty specific due to temperatures, humidities, and wind. West Covina is different from Pomona believe it or not. Can you post a picture of the entire lawn showing the thin spots? How have you been watering (duration and frequency)? Most noobs get this very wrong - and so do a lot of old timers. If you have fertilized since you moved in, what did you use and how often? Have you used any herbicide, insecticide, or fungicide? If so, when and what? Would you characterize your soil as hard? ...and I mean when it is wet....See Moreneed help making my exterior more interesting
Comments (13)Asking a professional to give you his time for free for a consultation that you should have had (and paid for) with your own architect is foolish at this late date. It's also borderline rude to ask him to donate his professional services to you in a private consult when that is how he puts the bread on his table. It's like asking a doctor at a party to listen to this nagging cough that you've had for a couple of months. Your own architect is the one that should be on the hook to fix this mess. Since you asked for opinions, here goes: Shed roof dormers instead of the gabled dormers would be more appropriate for a Craftsman style home. Eliminate the sad inappropriate attempt at a Palladian window. 6 over 1 windows and cedar shingles would also be more appropriate. Eliminate the shutters entirely. You need much more substantial sized support columns for the porch--and fewer in number. Stone for the columns would add a nice natural accent. Even with doing all of that, you still will have only have some Craftsman styling on a modern home. You'd have to do a substantial redrawing of the whole structure from your architect to achieve a true Craftsman style home. For example, the roof pitch would have to be lowered and the rafter tails become part of the signature style of the home. You need to emphasize a strong horizontal line in the home's design rather than the verticality that the present design exhibits. This is one of the hazards of buying one of the housemill plans off of the net....See MoreHow can I make my kitchen look more contemporary?New canisters?(p
Comments (32)I'll chime in as a fan of contemporary myself, and a not-so-much fan of country. Your kitchen definitely has a country look to it for reasons already posted. The natural color oak cabs unfortunately don't fall into any description of contemporary, but I would expect touching the cabs to be off the table. If you need canisters for practical reasons (e.g. storage), then consider stainless steel. I got a nice set from Costco for not much money, and Crate & Barrel also have nice ones. Your family room has a contemporary look to it (with the exception of the table lamp). If you look at the elements there in comparison to your kitchen, what you see are solid colors, clean lines, and a lack of nicknacks. Look at the window treatments in particular. Solid color valence, and solid color drapes. Also look at the artwork over the fireplace. Dramatic dark frame that matches the color of the fireplace below, complementary colors in the matting, and a repeating dark brown mat towards the inside. So ask yourself, "how do I bring these design themes to my kitchen?" Well, replace the window treatment with a solid color. I would recommend a dramatic color that matches some other elements in the room such as your counters. Vertical pleating such as you have now is more country. No pleating (like your window valence in the family room) or horizontal pleating (like in roman shades) are more contemporary. Although roman shades always have a summer beach house feel for me, but that's probably just me. For the stuff on top of the cabinets, you should replace them with repeating items in solid or repeating colors. For example you could use a dozen clear/colored art glass plates that again match the counters. The key here is to use multiples of the same item in the same or similar colors, whereas currently you have a mix of disparate items (plate, jug, basket, bottle, etc). Anyway you get the idea - repeating elements, repeating colors, simple lines, no clutter. Those things say "contemporary" to me. Good luck and I hope that helps a little....See MoreHow can I make my couch look less blue, more grey.
Comments (20)Your room is lovely; it's unfortunate that some people get satisfaction from being rude - must make them feel better about themselves somehow. When you put the sample against the couch are they different or the same? Or did you not actually have a sample or just the pic of it. If you don't have a sample, I'd order one and see if they are the same. The color is lovely; I personally think it is much more interesting and livable than a darker gray would be, but that's me, not you. It looks great in your space. Will the store take it back if the fabric doesn't match the sample?...See Moremv5869
