Houzz has taken over GardenWeb
Comments (22)My first reaction is that it's a good fit. There's a lot of cross traffic among some GW members and Houzz. Additionally, social streams are proven ways of keeping people involved with a site after a particular interest has been filled. I'm only guessing, but I'd think Houzz would want the forums, and want to keep them intact for that reason. It's not whether they have cooking, it's whether bringing in the CF to talk about cooking is of complementary interest to the people who frequent Houzz. There's the whole urban foraging movement, and Williams-Sonoma selling Yuppie chicken coops. I'm sure the Harvest Forum will find traction with the backyard-to-table crowd. They'd be best served by leaving clunky old Gardenweb alone. I've said this before, but the format where most recent reply, rather than most recent thread start or most popular is on top, and old threads fall off the bottom, is most conducive to lively and always fresh daily discussions. There's nothing duller than a forum where the members expect a newbie to wade through 3000 pages of past content to "get up to speed" on that which has been discussed before. Each discussion is a little different, and (nearly) each new person each thread attracts has something interesting to add. This past year there must have been half a dozen discussions of how to make spaghetti sauce! How great is that! It's also great that we're mostly self policing, and members feel free to throw in personal news, minor tangents, etc., without having the topic police editing them. Another great thing is all the white space. Jasdip is spot on about the avatars, animated signatures, etc., that choke most message boards nowadays. The good sized and scalable fonts make it easier to read GW as well. Summary: GW is great as is. :) My big question is was GW spun off or was Houzz acquired by NBC?...See MoreHouzz/Gardenweb Monitors - Question/Request
Comments (36)You submit a request through their FAQs. They did respond when I was having trouble with my account, but I sent one a week ago because I stopped getting emails for likes and comments on my threads. They never responded. I don't think Houzz is as interested in devoting resources to the GW forum when there's so much else on this website than little old us....See MoreGardenweb lover, not houzze lover
Comments (5)I'm having a different experience. I used the old garden web and then had to take 4-5 years off to get a new garden started. I have always bookmarked pages, and I have garden web pages bookmarked, both the master list of GW forums Master list of GW forums and the forums I visit most. In addition, as I've done some painting, etc, to a house that needs work in more than painting, I've really enjoyed Houzz's other features and am glad have it. They have a very easy format for me to look at other non-garden house "stuff" and I've gotten some valuable info, too. Maybe add some bookmarks? GW is pretty painless for me right now with bookmarks, and I LOVE how easy it is to add photos. Before I had to use Photobucket, which is under no circumstances an option since they started charging in the hundreds for the use of their services. Very glad I can upload pictures from my computer directly now....See MoreHOUZZ SUPPORT ATTENTION!! GardenWeb is BROKEN.
Comments (112)Mad_Gallica - thank you SOOO much for identifying the problem! It makes sense that the Your Topics feed is the problem, since I stopped being able to access the second page about the same time that transition happened. In all the discussions of Houzz problems with GW, I'd never seen that mentioned on this forum. I really appreciate you bringing that to my attention with a relatively manageable fix, even if that means renegotiating around Houzz's clumsy front end to find the Roses and Antique Roses forum. Emily, I appreciate the alternate links and I was able to access the second pages from those links as well, just not when using the Your Topics page that is supposed to be our starting place to filter out the other discussions. It's ironic that the primary innovation that was supposed to make GW more user-friendly has made it unusable for me from that format (I wonder why others using Your Topics on this forum don't seem to have the same problem). Technical support clearly didn't have information about this bug, at least not sufficiently to resolve the problem or even to indicate that this problem legitimately existed apart from my browser, and they were unable to suggest a strategy to test the assumption or a workaround as you did in your posts. We appreciate your problem solving with us on this forum, but the contrast between you and technical support/programmers for Houzz is one of the reasons we've had the kinds of reactions that Jeri mentions above. You have shown genuine signs of caring and trying to resolve some of the problems, but that has not been the case for most of the rest of the Houzz personnel. Even with your input, the things that are problems don't seem to change even this long after they've been unworkable. If it's possible for you to pass along these bugs to the programmers in ways that could get results it would be welcome, but we just don't have much confidence that you'll be able to get changes accomplished. Thanks for helping though and for being a positive presence in a sea of frustration. Cynthia...See Morerockybird
