Bona Sealers Question

Hi - I have not ventured over to the flooring forum very often, but I wonder if anyone knows the difference between the Deep Tone Sealer and the Bonaseal. Does the Deep Tone make the floor darker at all? I need a light floor as our house is pretty dark (in the woods), and we've decided to get white oak rift/quartered as it fits with the style of the house. We'll probably be using Bona Traffic or Traffic HD finish. I want the floor to look as natural-colored as possible and really don't want anything to turn it pinkish or orangey, or darker.

Thanks for any info you have on the sealers.

Using BonaSeal will give you the lightest natural color.

Loba products using the Loba UV Protect. It will stop the yellowing due to UV exposure. In fact it is SPECIFICALLY made for maple. Maple has TWO issues with yellowing: 1. the finish can produce yellowing (Bona Traffic HD does NOT do this). 2. the MAPLE turns YELLOW when sunlight (or even over head lighting) hits it. You need to find the TWO things that stop this: #1. Water borne finish that is "clear" or "non-yellowing" #2. UV protection/additive that stops the UV rays from affecting the maple. I don't know if bona has the #2 on the list....but I know for a FACT that Loba does. And their finishes are AMAZING!

In my experience, standard oil-modified polyurethane wears better, and it certainly costs a lot less. The downsides are slow drying, smell and ambering. As much as I like oil poly, I feel Weathered Oak would turn yellow over time if you use it. We used to recoat a salon floor regularly. At a seminar I asked an expert if he had any recommendations for a finish that would wear better than Traffic. He recommended oil poly and said it wears better than any of the top shelf waterborne urethanes, even the one his company sold. Unfortunately the salon was in a residence hotel and we could use it due to the odor. Depending on your wear and tear, Mega HD Clear might be a viable option for you. It costs about $50/gallon less than Traffic.

To achieve that light brown on Ash you'll either have to stain or apply a custom tinted sealer/urethane. I don't think any of the Bona sealers would be that brown. For a stain I'd suggest something like DuraSeal Golden Oak or maybe Chestnut diluted with natural. Either one would probably benefit from mixing in a bit of Country White to soften the look. Water popping before staining would reduce the graininess. I have a finisher who tints Bona sealers and urethanes regularly though that would be my second choice. It may turn out you'll need to use a combination of the two processes, a custom stain topped with tinted clear coats. If it's hard to reduce the yellow tones from the Ash, a little purple tint can give it a more brown cast.

Your flooring contractor can make up samples for you. It's no different from making stain samples.

BonaSeal. Used Bona Deep Tone Sealer a couple of times and never understood the product; little difference in appearance. But just BonaSeal is the way to go. White oak will not go pink...you will get blonds, tans and some nice browns.

thanks. I got a chance to talk to the installer we plan to use and he says that the bonaseal gunks up whatever the device is that he uses to polish/sand it before applying the Traffic. (I can't remember what term he used for it.) And that Deep Tone Sealer does not do that. But he is going to make me up samples with both and with matte and satin finishes so I can see. He also said with the DTS he usually puts on two coats, then two coats of Traffic but with the bonaseal he'll only put on one coat, then two coats of traffic.

If you abrade BonaSeal before it has had a chance to loose all its water, then it will be somewhat soft and won't powder as much as it should. Deep Tone Sealer is a different formulation and may flash off its water quicker and may powder better.

Bonaseal also states on the back of its label that you dont need to abrade if its been less than 24 hours before the next coat. For the smoothest results it says to abrade, but you can still get a good result by abrading the traffice pretty well. I understand the nice thing about water bourne products is you can do multiple coats in a day, but its your floor, if bonaseal is what you want, then have the guy wait longer than he normally would to abrade the bonaseal so it will powder up for him.

Ask him exactly how he abrades BonaSeal. He may be using the wrong product. It's not necessary to abrade between coats (within 48 hours) but doing so results in a smoother floor. I was taught that BonaSeal has something in it that balls up if abraded improperly.

They recommend a Bona Conditioning pad with one or two Delta sheets.

We generally use a white nylon pad with a strip or two of 150 grit adhesive backed sandpaper tape. It doesn't load up and comes out super smooth.

I normally use a maroon pad with the 150grit paper. the only time i have ever had the bonaseal not powder nicely was when i rushed the job. outside of that never had a problem.

Me too.

I have also beat abrading between coats to cut grain raise by sanding to 120.
