email link problems

When I go to a web page and click on a "contact me" or similar link, a message that says "mailto:" with their email address shown. My computer then tries to open Outlook, which I don't use. How to I tell my browser to use gmail or hotmail or yahoo or any other internet-based email program, rather than an application on my computer?

You are trying to contact someone else when you click contact me: and of course their addy is in, after composing your message just click send whatever e-mail opens. P.S. do you have your other e-mail set as default if not then yes, outlook will open.

Mailto: links typically don't work with web-based mail services. They're intended to open the "real" mail client program local on the user's computer (i.e. Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, etc.).

That being said, recent versions of Firefox bring up a dialog offering a choice of the default mail client program, Yahoo, or GMail. I checked IE11, it doesn't do that, only offers Thunderbird (my e-mail program of choice for many years) ... so I assume you're using IE.

It looks like the email issue has been fixed however, any changes that were made (trade list updates, etc.) were not backed up. For instance, I did an 'overhaul' on my trade lists yesterday... everything was saved and it was reflected on my member page last night. This morning, it's back to how it was prior to GW having issues. Was nothing backed-up when they were working on the email problem?

Cripes, I forgot to add what email programs I am using. I use Gmail, Yahoo, and Charter which is my main home mail. I seldom look at those things owbist, so wouldn't have realized that was an icon for a hot link, but thanks so much for calling that to my attention, tho I do not use outlook, would it perhaps be in yahoo, or gmail also? Grandms, I do not use live mail either, so gotta look elsewhere I guess. I will try and figger out sumpin with the info you folks have provided, and thanks so much, at least it is a start. Shaddy

Yes, I am using IE 11. I am also using Chrome for my other gmail account, to keep them straight and I may eventually give up on IE. Does Chrome have the same choices as Firefox?

I don't use Chrome, it's not installed on my computers. Firefox has been my browser of choice for many years, since the 0.X versions, and possibly earlier when it was called Firebird.

I don't use Google Chrome so I don't know if this is the best solution (or if it even works) but there is a "mailto:" extension in the "Chrome Web Store":
