Comments (3)For the mirror, put the builder's special in and then go to a framing store and ask them to cut you four pieces to go around the outside. Then you can use something like construction adhesive to glue the frame around the mirror. Comments (31)Hi Eve. The neighbour's palisades are not a common view on this forum... You're clearly from SA! (I am too) I would keep the current desk. I much prefer working at a large desk, regardless of the clutter or lack thereof. And you have the space for it. And it's wood (don't really want to switch that for the modern flimsy stuff do you!) Consider a smaller secondary desk, a sorta work-in-sight desk, for what you're not currently working on, or the printer, spare stationery, etc. You could put that beneath the window, with bookshelves to each side, and the main large desk near the west wall, facing east. Alternatively, the main desk against the south wall. (shown in the pics below) You should have space for a second chair, relaxing type, away from the desk. Keep a rug, whether this one or another. It makes a place cosy like nothing else. Lose the mirror - they should be functional or reflect something of interest. Replace it with art, something that gives you the calm feeling you're looking for. Look into wall lighting, for ambient cosy light. Were I you, I'd focus on getting the shelves first. You could have someone build them to fit the space perfectly, though free-standing. This will get you started on organising the space, which will work wonders. And the other additions can come as ideas, time, and budget allow. Suggestion - at the time of day you typically work, clear everything out of the space, aside from the desk and chair. (That means everything on the desk too). Move the desk and chair around to various positions, and sit for a bit in each. You'll find yourself visualising the rest of the space when you do. Find what suits you. Sometimes facing into/out of a room, lighting, random unexplainable preferrence, perception of space, etc, all makes a difference and you'll notice it best in reality. The pics are more or less accurate in dimensions. You can replace the pinboard and art with bookshelves along the north wall, can't have too many....See MoreBuilder grade kitchen needs help!
Comments (33)For the record, I really like what you’ve done so far with your house. I think it’s hard for posters of a certain age to understand that trends, particularly among the younger generations, is much more fluid and can’t be contained to one genre. We are far less rigid, and for us, decorating is a process, not an event, resulting in a house that is uniquely OURS. (I’m posting this from my room with a leather sectional, rustic bench, scandi-inspired wet bar, and mcm bookcase.) I agree with previous posters that hardware will make a world of difference in your cabinetry. I lean toward matte black (might be too dark, it’s hard to tell from photos) or an unlaquered brass or brushed gold, if you have that anywhere else. Switching the faucet out to something less generic of a style/finish would also help. I would look for some rugs (I tend to like a flat-weave) with a subtle pattern/texture and maybe some patterned throw pillows for the couch. A cool backsplash would help, but I think you’ll want to replace your counter (and maybe sink?) when you do it, so I would hold off for now until you decide for sure what you want. There are some decent laminates out there, even prefab ones that don’t have the built-in 4” backsplash, which would go a long way toward making your kitchen look custom....See MoreBuilder Grade Kitchen What to Do!!
Comments (19)I would see about adding some glass door cabinets above the ones you have, I think art that mimics looking out a window to some place you love would be best above the sink. I agree a counter depth fridge and no to the panels on either side fridges need air all around them unless made to be built in. The rest keep as is for now and down the road if the soace functions well then you can always paint the cabinets and remove that small strip of backsplash you have and replace with tile.Yes to some nice knobs or pulls but for use to advise that we need to know a bit more about your style....See Morerichmondkat
