Outdoor gas fire pit question

Mini Soda

I am building an outdoor gas fire pit for our patio. I had a 3/4" natural gas line run and have a 31" stainless fire pit "bowl" that will hold lava rock and apparently is capable of 150k BTU. I don't want a puny little 3" flame.

Here's the question. When I received the fire pit yesterday, the instructions outlined all of the various setbacks and construction materials. It called for two 18 sq inch vents on opposing sides. The base is already built and natural stone installed. It seems to me like all of the heat will just escape immediately into the air... curious if I can get away without punching holes in the beautiful base.

I have included a picture of the fire pit below. Many thanks!
