am finally redoing my master bathroom and I am now more confused then ever.

My
“plan” was to make the bathtub into a large shower (approx. 7”x4’) with shower
heads and sprays on both sides of the shower and a bench on the side of the
shower with the slanted ceiling. 2 of the walls are outside walls and the
ceiling is the attic. I wanted to be able to use all the shower heads and
sprays at the same time. I’m going for a contemporary look

When
I went to a plumbing supply store to get information the man there told me how
much water I would be using with all the sprays and heads going and I would run
out of water very very quickly so it looks like what I wanted and what will
actually work are very different. I have a 50 gallon water tank and am not
planning on adding an additional tank.

So
after finding this out and reading a lot on this site I do not think this will
work and I’d appreciate options as to what would work. Here are my questions (I
attached some pictures - the current area & my hand drawn layout)

Should I only
put the shower head and sprays on the inside wall and then on the opposite
wall the handheld and the bench?
Any other thoughts on where to put everything?
Should I make
the shower 7x4 or will take be too large and get cold quickly? What is the
best size?
For the bench
should I go with built in or teak?
Any other
suggestions?

What is the ceiling height (from the finished floor height) under the bulkhead at the highest point? At the lowest point? Are you considering a steam shower project?

Hi,

The ceiling height under the bulkhead is 77", the other wall is 95". I wasn't planning on a steam shower

If you're going to move, I'd say replace them if they're in bad shape--do they REALLY have to stay? You'll have a faster sale if prospective buyers don't think they had to redo the bathroom the moment they move in. It's probably the best "spiffing up" money you can spend! Especially if you're going to do part of that bathroom--do it all. Especially the shower--I think that would be a major drawback to someone thinking of buying your place. And a half-done bathroom would be a bigger drawback to me than a totally undone one. In my market, I'm finding that the freshly renovated homes are moving fast, and for good money. Places that seem the tiniest bit worn are sitting--and not selling, even for less, actually. The bathroom would be a BIG bang for the buck.

Mongo, Tundra, Thanks to the both of you. Part of my concern was how to accomplish the slope with concrete. I'll be blunt, my concrete skills suck and pouring a sloped pad was likely to be well outside my skills range. Tundra, thanks for the pictures, they clarified a great deal. It's true that a picture is worth a thousand words because I don't know how you could describe what you did without at least some drawings but the pictures tell the tale just fine. Above is a piss poor rough drawing of the floor plan of my bathroom. As you can see my intention is to install the drain at the far side of the shower enclosure. My wife has requested that she be able to spray down the whole bathroom with a hose. I'm guessing that to allow for that would make the bathroom "wet"?? My current working thought is to pour the pad in two stages. The first would be about 2 to 2-1/2" below the existing grade. The other would be 2" below that. The demarcation like would be the beginning of the shower enclosure area. The purpose of pouring it so low is so that I could use deck mud to create a dual slope from the edges to center and from right to left (as seen from diagram). I was thinking 1/8" per linear foot of drop for the primary bathroom area and somewhere in the range of 1/4-1/2" drop for the shower proper. I would mud out the preliminary slope with it all rolling into the weep holes of the drain assembly. I would then membrane the whole thing. I'd membrane the walls in the primary bath area up to the 4' mark since that's how high my tile is going to go. I'd membrane the shower area all the way to the ceiling since that's how high the tile will go in there. On top of the membrane I'm planning to make a final deck mud slope that I would then thinset the tile to. I'm using 3/4" pennyround mosaic for the floor and ceiling so adjusting to the slope won't be an issue. As I said, that's the current mental formulation, pending feedback and ideas. As with all battle plans it's not likely to survive contact with the enemy. Mongo, don't fret about rambling. As you might have noticed I'm a bit on the verbose end of things myself. Remodeling Magazine publishes a Remodel Cost Vs. Value Report each year which includes cost data for a variety of different remodeling projects organized by regions across the U.S. For your region, their data indicate a $21K cost to remodel a 5' x 7' bath at a mid-range quality level. Your master bath is larger and presumably you'd want a higher quality level, too. Here's a link to the online report: https://www.remodeling.hw.net/cost-vs-value/bathroom-remodel?y=2019 If you want to forgo a shower door, our rule of thumb is that you'll need at least 5 ft from the shower head that is protected with tile or glass. I don't see how you're going to achieve that based on your current plan. In addition to its effect on your vanity, splashing creates a slip/fall hazard in the area between the shower and toilet. Regarding your question whether eliminating the tub will torpedo your home's resale value, the answer is that it depends. It depends on 1.) consumer preferences in your local market, and 2.) the demographics of the most likely purchasers of your home. Best wishes for a successful project!

First question is always "what's your budget"? Other than the stained floor, nothing appears really wrong that styling won't help. So you may be able to achieve an attractive space without spending the world. See if you can have that terrazzo professionally cleaned and sealed. If that's possible, it's likely the easiest solution and will save a lot over the cost of replacement. The floor tile and vanity are cool neutrals. Replacing them doesn't make much sense unless they are broken. But the paint in there is a warm neutral and clashes terribly. Consider a pale blue or light grey. Consider adding more lighting. Updating the towel bars and existing lighting fixture/fan would help too. Then buy some towels that are a dark version of whatever paint colour you chose. That will add a bit of necessary contrast

A 50 gallon water tank is quite large. I don't understand why shower sprays wouldn't work. Get the shower you want!

For several years I've been measuring friends' showers and hotel showers, and -- in my opinion -- 5'x4' is the ideal shower size. This is large enough to feel spacious and luxurious, large enough to house a shower stool, large enough to go door-less, if that's something that interests you ... yet small enough that it "warms up" and small enough that you can reach grab bars on both sides at once.

In saying that, I should note that I'm a very small person. If you top 6', your mileage may vary. Also, the amount of glass in your project will affect its feel (if not its actual function).

I wonder if you could take it down to 5' wide and use the extra space for towel storage; something like this -- pretend it's next to a shower:

Do you own that many towels? I don't.

For your space, I recommend something like this:
Let the front half of the shelves open to the room for storage of towels, etc. You could include baskets in these shelves, or even a tall, thin hamper in the lower half.

Then let the back half of this shelf unit open into the shower. This'd give you plenty of space for toiletries, etc. IN the shower (too much storage, actually, but it would be out of the line of sight from the main room), and you could use the lower portion as a hidey-hole for a teak shower stool (teak is best for water-purposes).

I recommend a moveable shower stool instead of a built-in bench. You can buy them at Bed, Bath & Beyond for maybe $150. You can place it exactly where you want it: Under the rain shower today, out of the shower completely tomorrow, to the side for a child (or a sick person) to sit upon while someone else washes his hair. And if you ever have a truly sick person in the house, you can remove the small shower stool and bring in a full-fledged hospital shower chair (ugly but functional). Furthermore, wood isn't cold on the rear end like tile or stone.

Shower heads ...

How many /what type are you considering, and is it realistic that you'd want to run them at the same time? Without knowing exactly what you want, I'll take a couple stabs in the dark:

- I don't see any point to a plain shower head PLUS a hand-held. I do see the point to a hand-held on a sliding bar so you can slide it up/down, but I don't think it's a make-or-break.

- Remember that you want your hand-held to be accessible to your seat; if you go with a teak bench, no problem -- the bench can go to the hand-held's location. If you go with a stationary bench, you might want a second hand-held over the bench (which you'd never use at the same time as the main shower head).

- If you're doing a rain shower head, this is a whole different function /not really good for washing yourself. Typically this'd be placed dead-center (a good reason to have a moveable seat), and it wouldn't be used at the same time as the get-down-to-business-of-cleanliness shower head.

And related thoughts ...

- Where are your wet towels going to hang? Or, are you considering a heated towel unit?

- A big shower can be cold. Are you considering a heated floor, or a heater for the main room?

-Think through your on/off switches. You definitely want them to be able to reach in with one hand and turn on the water without walking into the shower all the way /exposing yourself to that first burst of cold water. And even though you say you want to run the shower heads all at once, you definitely want each one controlled by a separate control.

Get the shower you want!

Agreed, but in any number of house-related things as I've investigated "the best stuff", I've realized that the status quo isn't what I really want. The shower YOU really want will require some homework.
