A table grape for zone 7
Comments (12)Sometimes it's hit and miss with fruit This summer my wife bought some giant grapes at the market, but they were excellent. Both red and white, fantastic taste, crunchy almost like apples. I grow grapes, but often wonder why as the marketplace grapes are far superior. At least at times. The grapes might be local, not sure? Usually the wife buys them. This summer they were amazing. Some of the best grapes I ever ate. Our apples are also excellent. I just ate an excellent apple a few minutes ago. Cherries too, again huge, crunchy like apples too. I know they were Amish grown cherries. I got them at the Eastern Market. We often shop there for goods. My cherries also were no where as good as these Amish cherries. Many bad cherries at the regular market. So yeah most times they are not good. Again hit and miss. Fruitnut grows a number of grapes, you should ask him. One he likes is Summer Royal....See Morehow to get flame seedless to produce in zone 3/4
Comments (8)You would be hard pressed to find many "famous" types up here in general. Flame is the only one ive ever seen available. I will say this. Many if not all commercial varieties are usually bread for disease resistance, shipping ability and shelf life. Many fruits that a home grower grows arent "famous" but taste worlds better. I have read good things about valiant and it finally produced some flowers/clusters this year. I am hopefully going to get a taste of them this year! Vanessa is supposed to be a good quality table grape but it didnt survive here. If you can protect it you may want to try "Himrod". It seems to be widely available and is a high quality seedless green table grape according to U of Minn. They make thompson quality raisins as well. What you can try is contact "pam american nurseries toronto" and as them where they sell the "windmill" products. You may even be able to find out where flame is sold in your area....See MoreFlame seedless in zone 4
Comments (8)That is what I was thinking Glenn. I wont have a chance here if it didnt make it in NB. Ill detatch it from the trellis and lay it down.. Hopefully my snow cover may do something. So far I have 6 kinds. Flame, Niagra beta (these 3 first seasons) himrod, valiant and some volunteer seedlings. None have produced yet, but the Valiant is poised to do great things. Its over 6 feet tall ( thats 5 feet in a season) and it has a good 12 branches (which i need to train on a wire). The himrod hasnt been protected here in 3 years, and dies to the snow line. I hope putting it on the ground or wrapping the cane will work. Im expecting similar results from the niagra. I got the flame because they are available at the store, so I know what to expect... I guess i was a little excited when I seen it, and didnt realize it was a complex vinifera cross with muscat types...... No way in helll :(...See MoreFlame Seedless Grape Size and Pollinator
Comments (3)Remy: The berries on Flame are bigger than Thompson. Not big but a good size. Big enough that the gib acid isn't needed. Flame is a nice early table grape. Mine have been very crisp. You could plant a potted grape now but you will need to water regularly until it drops it's leaves. Anytime between now and January. Flame doesn't need a pollinator. Nor does any other grape I'm aware of. If you want to grow the best grape I know of find a Summer Royal. The berries are larger than Flame, it's probably sweeter, and the flavor is #1. I made raisins out of mine this year and they are sensational....See MoreRelated Professionals
