There was a children's book which I remember reading to my daughter: E. Nesbit's retelling of Beauty and the Beast, published in a small format by Frederick Warne, with illustrations by Julia Christe (not Julie, the actress, but another one). At any rate I remember noticing that the roses looked like David Austin's English roses -- pink. It was quite unusual. I don't know if they would have had those type of roses in the seventeenth century but it was a step in the right direction. Of course, we were huge E. Nesbit fans. In case anyone has a six year old daughter or granddaughter I notice that the book is still for sale on the Strand bookstore website for under three dollars.
