Both of them seed into wild areas courtesy of the birds which eat the fruit and then deposit the seed where ever with a dose of fertilizer. So since you can't control the birds, you really can't control these invasive plants unless you prune them down immediately after bloom. Their presence is a problem since they tend to replace native species since they don't have any native pests or diseases.

As someone who fights a variety of invasives including both the ones you mentioned along with shrubby honeysuckle, buckthorn, and barberry, among others, I strongly suggest that they not be planted and not be allowed to continue to grow.

This is what I was afraid of, and I will persevere. But it is so overwhelming, not just to take them all out but to fill the huge vacuum they leave. I have been replacing with shrubs as I've been able to scavenge them from friends and elsewhere on the property - sambuca and spice bush (good) and forsythia, lilacs, and pachysandra (not so good), but it feels like I will never overtake them. I can't just leave it a bare graveyard using cardboard and wood chips because they form a visual barrier against the deer fence which only works if deer are not motivated to leap 6 feet. Gardening should not feel like fighting ISIS but some days it does.

Anything nice? It smells wonderful in flower. However, even here where it isn't invasive it is still a boring choice.

In truth, long, long before the words "invasive species" was even uttered by anyone except maybe one or two extremely prescient individuals, this and all the other exotic honeysuckles were fairly nice plants. I liked the coral flowers and so on, but then an insect pest got to them and rendered even this attribute useless. So at this point, uh...........like davidrt says........lol!

I don't think the one with coral flowers is the invasive one, it's native. Are you talking about a coral colored hybrid? I'm not aware of any...do you mean Lonicera X tellmanniana?

I do have a coral colored honeysuckle. The one that is rampant has pale yellow flowers.

No, stuff like 'zabelli' or however that was spelled. I'm def. not talking the nice coral-flowered native ones. I'm just rusty on plants that haven't been marketed for decades now. There was one of the Tartarians with that going on, but the flower mite ruined it too. It is now a part of the invasive-self-hybridized triumvirate.

I had a Japanese honeysuckle at my former house (20+ yrs ago) ... I was new to landscaping, and didn't know it was an invasive species.

I planted it at the base of my lightpost, and it mounded all around the post nicely (about 3 ft tall) without climbing up it. We cut it back severely every winter. It really was very pretty, the spot was near our sidewalk, and guests would comment on the sweet aroma.

I wouldn't plant another one, my go-to now is Coral honeysuckle, but the other never gave me any problems, for whatever reason.

Yours does sound like a beast, I think replacing it is a good idea.

We've got scads of invasive Lonicera up here in Wisconsin. I forget the actual names-theyr'e out there on the interwebs-but the thing is, by now, they've all intertwined their genetics anyway. It's just a ball of confusion. I think these invasive shrub honeysuckles might be even worse to deal with than buckthorn. And that's saying something!

I had this in my tiny urban garden for years. It grew almost as a standard, tight against a north facing wall. I absolutely adored the fragrance - utterly intoxicating. It festooned the back gate, never a nuisance, remaining evergreen all year (although I did have to remove a lot of dead wood every few years or so). Whilst I can see why this might cause anxieties in a wilder situation, for me, it was a delight.

I think we still might be talking about different plants. The US native Lonicera-the vining types-are great plants for us. Anything and everything I've written here refers to the non-native shrub form species and their hybrids. I love the native hoenysuckles.

The vining Japanese type is an equal nightmare to the shrubby invasive forms . . . I have both along with buckthorn and Berberis , and all are a misery in wooded areas. I do love the native Lonicera sempervirens as do the hummingbirds.

Things invasive in the US may behave differently in the UK, so I wouldn't recommend one of the Japanese vines, even in the urban US since birds can move seeds quite a distance.

Vining honeysuckles are not something I've had to deal with at all. The invasive shrubs are all over the place. A good thing I have to say about them is that the root systems are very shallow, so even fairly large plants are easily pulled up. The bad thing is that the grain of their wood absolutely destroys blades. When honeysuckle was a major part of my pruning (destroying), I never had sharp blades on anything.

Yes, it does Sam-md (little black berries)...but since mine was in a tiny walled courtyard, any stray berries had to land in the minuscule raised edge bed - literally, a 15inch wide garden length 'border' and so the odd few which did were niftily removed. I know it is anomalous, to take delight in what is commonly regarded as a nightmare but no other honeysuckle, certainly not the better behaved periclymenum, have come close the the intoxicating fragrance of halliana.

It just came into bloom here.. That heady fragrance so redolent of childhood, sucking the honey from the little drop at the end of the pistil? Making me doubt myself all over about removing all of it...

One persons weed is another persons flower...I covered a ugly chainlink fence beautifully about 20 years ago with halls honeysuckle. I didn't know anything about invasive species. It was at the nursery and I remembered loving honeysuckle in my childhood, planted it, loved it, the people who ended up buying that house loved it, it still lives on. I'm not a plant scientist, I don't claim to know all about what it does in the wild, but for me it solved a very difficult problem and I loved it. I honestly wouldn't remove it if I were you but you have to follow your conscience. :)

The big difference is that in the UK Lonicera japonica (whether the cultivar 'Halliana' or not) does not seed around into the wild. On the other hand, however pretty and well behaved it might appear in US gardens, it does seed around there, via birds, and is listed as an invasive alien endangering natural ecosystems in many states.

Please don't plant or promote this horrible weed. It smothers out everything including our beautiful native pinxters, kalmias and trailing arbutus.

Like most invasive species, it's all a matter of location, location, location!! Japanese honeysuckle is not an invasive species in the PNW (which shares a climate like much of the UK) and is commonly sold and grown, particularly L.j. 'Halliana' and L. j. 'Purpurea', which has a purple tint to the foliage and bicolored flowers. They have a wonderful fragrance when in bloom, especially in the evening, and attract hummingbirds. They also seem to attract aphids more than most other types of vining honeysuckle, which is not a plus :-)

Considering the assortment of wonderful vining honeysuckles available that are NOT considered invasive, I see no reason to keep one in any area where this species IS considered invasive.
