That just came to me. I was going to check in today to see how Samkaren1692 was doing on her no smoking quest. Tomorrow my husband and I will be 2 months smoke free and we are very happy. Neither one of us has really had any urges to smoke and unlike most, we haven't gained any weight. Our eating habits have pretty much remained the same. Today's kind of a bummer though, had to put another one of our kitty's down. Cancer. She had a great life though and gave us a great deal of pleasure.

Acres, I'm so sorry about your kitty; it's so very hard to lose our beloved pets.

But I'm so very proud of you for your success in leaving cigarettes behind you. What an enormous gift you've given to each other and to yourselves. I'm so happy for you.

Ive read that you should plant below the graft for some plums in cold areas (by a neighbor, and Ive seen a thing or two online as well). Generally speaking though if you plant the graft you will more then likely either kill the tree (less likely) or get the tree to root above or at the graft, making the root stocks qualities moot (more likely to happen). Some people do prefer to grow their fruit trees on their own roots, so i guess those people may suggest doing so. The best advice and most common is plant at the the same depth as it was in the pot. If its bare root or burlaped, there will be a noticeable darker bark above the roots where the original soil line is.

All things being equal, yes, being a vine the vanilla does have the potential to add size much more quickly than a phal. Indoors, however, things are far from equal and I for one have lots of touble growing any vining plant indoors and no longer make any serious attempts at it. But that is not meant to discourage you, just to give you a heads up that you will need to be a little more active in actually providing good growing conditions for the vanilla rather than passively accepting what was given by whoever designed your house, the vanilla will likely demand a bit more light and consistently warmer temps than what is typical 'household' conditions. Size of pot is your least concern, obviously it should be reasonable (>6") but if you provide a moss pole or tree fern pole or other kind of vining structure that facilitates the health of the nodal roots that the vanilla will produce the entire burden of supporting the plant will not be left soley up to the roots in the pot. But even if you don't the potted roots can support way more plant than you would think. H

I hate being here with no use for photobucket:-( If you're going to get Hoya's, all the ones you both names are a ggod start! Robert. I shall have to give you pointers on getting yours to bloom. Hiya, Debi. The light issue is a huge variable because (for instance) Florida sun is so much stronger than our northern sun. Most of them that I grow in the house are in either east or west windows (mostly east) and they are either against the glass or only slightly in. Lacunosa rests against the glass in a north window with an east window close by and it blooms pretty constantly, though not with as many blooms at one time as my mom's that is in an east window. I have my 'Krimson Queen' in a north window and it's putting on nice new growth this spring, though I wouldn't expect it to bloom in a north window anytime soon. If blooms are your ultimate goal, more light will make that happen sooner. If beautiful foliage is your main goal, most do quite nicely in lower light conditions. For instance, I grow H. rubra (not to be confused with the variegated form...) The leaves that are on a vine that is completely out of any direct sun at all are spectacular, whereas the leaves on the rest of the plant are less appealing. I find obovata looks better in a somewhat shady location as opposed to high light conditions. But you will always sacrifice vigorous blooming in lower light conditions. I would put them as close to the window as possible. If you look at a footcandle chart, you'll see that the further you are from a window, the strength of light is considerably reduced. Hoyas are considered "medium light" plants, which means they need between 500-1000 footcandles of light to thrive. Anyway, clay vs. plastic - I think plastic wins for most people just because it doesn't dry out as fast. But it's really a choice, and your watering habits may find clay to be better. We are doing great. We went out to our favorite restaurant this week to celebrate our 51st anniversary. Can't believe it has been this long. We eloped in 1965.

Our 46th anniversary is coming up in the next few days..still it's the fact that our daughter was married in 1998 and one of our sons in 2000 that is suprising..that long ago...We smoked a few years back in the 70's and 80's but quit cold turkey and are still non smokers today....

Congratulations! You have made it through the toughest part. And double kudos for no weight gain, wish I could say that. I gained weight when DH quit. Then gained even more when I finally quit. Oh well, it's better than smoking, I guess, haha. I quit Dec. 7, 2008.

We will celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary on May 16.

Congratulations! You are definitely over the worst part now. I'm in my 12th year of being smoke-free. I'm so glad I quit. Of course, quitting has been very expensive since I buy myself a "smoke-free gift" on the monthly anniversary of quitting! Smoking would be cheaper, but not as much fun!!

It's wonderful that you have stuck to it. I agree that the worst is over .My 25th yr anniversary of being a non smoker is coming in Nov. You are fortunate that you do not have urges, I still have the occasional urge. You are doing a great thing for your health and will never be sorry you did it.

To help you kick the smoking habit, stay away from the smell of tobacco smoke. My supervisor had not smoked for 5 years and he confided with me that if he smelled someone smoking a cigarette, the old urge would come back, and that was something he had to battle.

So sorry about the loss of your kitty. Times such as that make it stressful when you are early in the process of quitting smoking. DH quit smoking on June 14, 2002 (the day he had a heart attack) and I quit a week later, He is one of those people who cannot stand the smell of cigarette smoke now, but most of the time it doesn't bother me unless it is really intense. Keep up the good work!

sheilajoyce_gw, I'm so glad you chimed in and told us how your doing. That was part of my intent, to see how everyone believes they are doing.

Yesterday was a bit rough, our kitty was momma to our remaining 6. Her son, our only boy is struggling so we need to keep an eye on him. The others are girls and girls can be unpredictable. We were hoping to celebrate with a big dinner out this weekend but the vet bill killed that. Instead I will continue working on my garden and I think we will cut down some black walnut trees. We have been thinning out the back acre of our lot. Tons of black walnut trees and very little sun can get through. Leaves it very damp and a haven for the snakes, snapping turtles and mosquitos. I think we will also do some burning and perhaps have a nice bon fire. I'll cook up some steak sandwiches and homemade fries.

Agreed about staying away from the smell of smoke. We were actually the only smokers in our family's and with those we hang out with so at least we have minimal temptations. Nobody smokes at our jobs either so that makes it easier. Hubby and I will celebrate 17 years over the Memorial day weekend. We married late in life but it is a first marriage for both of us.

Oh, sorry about your cat -- and a vet bill instead of a nice dinner! I am but very happy you AND your DH have beaten that addiction. Your lungs and circulatory systems are celebrating!

I never smoked more than three or four cigarettes a day (between 21 and 30). I only discovered I had been addicted when I quit. My DH never smoked. I don't know how he lived with me!

Yesterday I noticed an older woman crossing in front of my car. Her skin was completely colorless. *Smoker* flashed through my mind, and I remember thinking all older people were 'grey' like that.
