Foundation planting help

Hi, all. I have a bed that runs along the side of my house on the east side (morning and some afternoon sun) - it's roughly only about 3 ft deep and perhaps 40 to 50 feet long. I am in zone 5, I think (upper Midwest). After 20+ years I tire of planting the same old annuals (impatiens and petunias, and lots of them). I'd actually like to be able to put in perennials that are low maintenance, but I am a flower nut and would like something flowering (preferably profusely haha) all summer long. I'd also like something a bit taller than the usual aforementioned petunias/impatiens I mentioned as it's a two-story house and that side needs a little pizzazz (it only has one window on the whole side). Any suggestions? Another thought I had was planting a few cannas (even though I'd have to replant every year) because I just LOVE the flowers on these, but I don't think they'd get enough sun throughout the day. Thanks so much, my fellow garden aficionados!
