row spacing in containers
Comments (2)I haven't tried multiple plants in the same container yet. Will be giving it a try this yr. with a pole bean tree in a container and bunching onions etc.. But I would think one would want to stick to the spacing suggestions.... For example.. last yr I had two extra bell pepper plants I started that someone never came and got. So I put both in a 5 gal. bucket! As the plants didn't get as big as the ones in individual containers.. they still produced useable fruit, just not as big and as fast as with the ones in individual containers. Still not sure if it was because I potted them up late an or cuz they both were in the same container. That has been my experience to date.....See MorePlant in flat ground or on raised rows on flat ground?
Comments (2)I don't think there is a preferred or common method as there are too many variables that will determine which is best for each garden. Indeed the best approach may be a combination of both. In part it depends on the type of soil you have - hard pack clay or sandy or good top soil easy to work to a depth of 6-8". Also what crop you are trying to grow, how well the soil drains, how quickly it warms in the spring, how bad your weed problem is, if you are using mulch and which type, and even how much room you have to plant in. Raised rows have the advantages of warming soil faster in the spring so allow for earlier planting. They also drain better if you have poorly draining soil. They work well for root crops like beets and carrots and potatoes. They allow thicker planting of some crops but won't support the heavier root structure of some plants like corn as well. And they also dry out faster so in hot climates require more watering, leach nutrients faster, and use up more space. So depending on your soil quality, the crop you want to grow, and the amount of space you have to work with the best approach would be to try a combination of both and see which works best for you in your garden. Comments (1)Can't help you on the apples but for the BB I would not go closer than 2 feet apart. At that spacing they will create a hedge....See MoreMinimum and maximum distance between plants and rows of them
Comments (2)Spacing depends a lot more on HOW you grow rather then WHAT you grow. For example, a farmer planting 100 acres in rows he can harvest via tractor is going to use a much different spacing then a home gardener using raised beds and the square foot method. The other big variable is cultivar/type. You have "tomato" on the list, but the spacing for a determinate tomato is going to far different then for an indeterminate one. Also "lettuce" is it a leaf lettuce or a romaine? The spacing requirements are much different here too. Like Dave said, what do you mean by pretend? A little more detail would be exponentially helpful....See MoreRelated Professionals
