Ack! FedEx delivered my new console to the wrong house!

tibbrix

I was so excited to receive my new, gorgeous low console today. I was away for the weekend, and they had tried to deliver it on Saturday, but it needs a signature, so they left a FedEx sticky thing on my front door.

Original delivery dates was stated as being today, Monday the 11th, so I didn't think anything about my being away from Thurs. - Sunday.

Discovered this a.m. @ 9:00 that you can sign the bottom of those "we tried to deliver" notes and put it back on the door and that will count as a signature so they'll leave the item if you're not home.

I signed it and put it back on the door @ 9:30.

I checked all day for the delivery. Nothing. I finally checked the tracking # @ 4:30, and it said it was delivered at 7:41 this morning and that a signature is on file!

What? Sticky thing is still on the door, no package, I signed for nothing.

FedEx is on the case, and I'm sure they'll either track it down or make good on it, but I'm curious as to who signed for it at 7:30 in the morning, opened it, realized they hadn't ordered any such thing, didn't look at the name and address - or DID but didn't bring it over to my house.

Or are keeping it themselves?

Not mad at all at FedEx. But I really want to know who has it and why they haven't brought it over to the correct address. If that happened to me, that thing would have been at the correct address by 8 a.m.

olychick, wow. But you kind of prove my point. Look what you went through to try to get that package to the right person. And, as you say, when you opened it and realized it was not something you ordered, you looked at the packaging slip to see the addressee and address.

That's exactly what I would have done as well.

No, the package could not be left w/o a signature. And they had been to my house and left the sticky thing, not this house. So some human being signed for this package and took delivery of it from the driver.

This was at 7:30 this morning. Nothing in my mailbox. maybe they can't bring it to me until tomorrow, and maybe they even called FedEx to let them know of the mistake and FedEx hasn't put two and two together.

Who knows. I'm sure I'll end up with this console, one way or another, and I'm trying not to go to thinking whoever signed it has decided to keep it for themselves.

Several years ago a neighbor came over because FedEx said they had left a package with us, and that we had signed for it. We had not! The neighbor was very concerned, it was a pricy little item. It wasn't someone we really know well, and TBH, I still don't know how it ended.

Advice on Matching Console and Coffe Tables

    Q

    Comments (16)
"What is wrong with having a couple of matching items in a room?" Just my opinion of course, and worth every penny! ;-) In general - no, matching isn't bad, and there's nothing wrong with suites of matching items. But IMO, there are some things that are better matched than others -- for example, simple sofas or chairs, traditional tables, light fixtures. But pieces that are supposed to look 'unique' or 'one of a kind' should not have an exact match. Those would include Oriental rugs (close is OK - exact says 'mass produced'), quirky or exotic pieces, 'hand-made' items. Splitting them so that they're not within each other's sightlines would mitigate the match -- possibly completely.

Ack! Where do I put a piano?

Update: So, as most of you know, shortly after the piano was delivered my lovely DD (pictured above playing the piano) accidentally started a fire on the third floor of our house. The piano was saved but suffered damage to the finish. The whole house was gutted and we moved back in almost exactly a year after the fire (this past Christmas eve, to be exact). The piano is in its new position and we, once again, get to listen to our DD play beautiful music for us. ETA: Thankfully, no one was hurt in the fire :) Hmmm, looking at the pics, I think I've hung the art too high.

@lyfia It will not impact us moving in or anything, but it is an issue if the lien claimant(s) decide to file to enforce the lien, which they have 6 months to do. If we're not able to convince the lien claimant(s) that we've already paid. Then this thing would go to trial. The courts would decide who, if anybody, we have to pay and how much. At least that's how I understand it. I do hope that we can successfully get the liens off without going to trial. We will see.. Today we received another lien notice...for $26K for cabinets and countertops. I guess I should probably shut up now. It looks like this could blow up legally and I don't want to post anything that could be used against me....

Tibb, honestly my DH would sign for anything without even looking and he would assume it was for me. If he waited until I came home to bring it down to the house it could go all day before the snafu was caught.

My DD just had a bad experience with FedEx delivering her dog food to the wrong address. Chewy stepped right up to the plate and shipped more out when DD called but it was the FedEx driver who screwed up and delivered it to a house that wasn't even on the same street. It was misdelivered on a Friday so it was at least four days until the package was delivered correctly.

UPS is just as bad. I ordered Easter candy for my DGC from Williams Sonoma. It was essential that it be delivered before Easter. On Friday I tracked the package and it was on the truck for delivery. Later that evening I got an email from UPS saying that there was now a new delivery date which was Monday. The next day I had to go out and fight the crowds to buy Easter candy for the children so I could fill their Easter baskets. When the candy was delivered Monday I called WS and told them what happened. They offered to take the candy off my bill and I could keep it but I asked them to issue a call tag. I didn't want candy and I didn't want the grandchildren getting even more candy. It turns out the package was loaded onto a truck but it was the wrong truck. I know that accidents happen but I think that they just allow sloppy work by their employees.

I think it's all this rush, rush, rush culture we live in. People are being killed by texting and blabbing on phones (or worse, killing other people) because they can't wait to get home to get a phone call or make one or respond to a text.

Companies constantly boast about their speed. Everyone is in a rush now for everything. It drives me nuts.

I told FedEx that there is no rush here because their really isn't.

I'm guessing there is a reasonable explanation behind this. Such as some mentioned here LOL. Can't you see the signature on the tracking page? On UPS or Fed Ex one (or maybe both) you can see who signed for something.

I'm constantly getting my next door neighbor's UPS packages. Once I was expecting something from Amazon, and so put the package aside to deal with later -- which turned out to be about three days later when I finally had time -- oops, it was for the neighbor!! (She and I have the same first name -- but she never seems to get my packages!)

Hmmm, maybe it's just our fedex program at work. I can track the package online and there is an option to see who signed for it (if signature was required).

Tibbrix~ Signature On File means that no in-person signature was received. Signature on file means that the customer has a standing release note or one was left at the door.

I know that's not your case~ just saying...

In our town / area it is a well known "joke" that once a person proves he or she is absolutely unqualified for any other job in the universe he can get a job as a driver for FedEx. They apparently cannot read in central Georgia. At home we've had packages left at our gate a half mile from the house, in the rain, iNOT wrapped in plastic, and the driver---who had our gate code on the address-----put in his notes "left at front door." And was stupid enough to capture a picture of the gate with no house in sight as "proof" of delivery. This has happened repeatedly, about every other time they deliver, for years now. They keep apologizing for the sheer incompetence of the drivers....

In town at our office, they often deliver our packages to other offices, especially a dental office whose name and address bear no resemblance whatsoever to ours. Luckily the office manager is a friend and calls me if they can't catch the idiot driver who dumps his cargo and runs. Usually our packages are one of many they're receiving that day. Once, we were waiting for something important and DH kept calling the office to see if it had been delivered. Finally he called and said the online tracking status had been changed to "delivered" and we assured him the package was not at the office. So DH called the local delivery hub (which is in our town and serves several counties). They sent out a message to the driver, who LIED TO HIS SUPERVISOR and said he was "on the way to deliver it to us." Actually, he'd been called by the office he delivered it to in error (who then called us) and was on his way there to pick it up and bring it to us. He didn't realize that everyone already knew he'd delivered to the wrong place. Of course, Fed Ex apologized for his incompetence and duplicity. And that is just one of many mishaps with that company and their drivers.

    Good luck with your console.

Such stories! I had no idea. I've never had a problem, although common sense says there are likely quite a few, considering the volume they move.

I do wish we, as a culture made it a little easier for people to just admit they made a mistake and apologize for it and move on. Stuff like this doesn't anger me at all. Nothing makes me feel worse when I've made a mistake, esp. in my professional duties, which happens often, than the "offended" person going off on me. Conversely, I always appreciate those who have the grace, graciousness, and empathy to be kind and forgiving. Of course, if the same thing happens over and over and over....well, then it does move from mistake into incompetence, which does piss me off.

We are getting rain today and I am concerned that it's sitting on some stoop somewhere, and it would be unprotected since it didn't rain yesterday.

Thanks, Chispa, for that explanation. It does appear that that is what happened, so that would indicate that it has not been taken possession of, which means it's also sitting outside somewhere, right? Ugh.

Thanks Linen. I'm sure this will be resolved by FedEx, including if it gets destroyed in rain today. But I'm patient about this kind of thing.

I once had a large shipment of blinds-a full house's worth-misdelivered. I remember how panicked I felt when I saw online that they had been delivered, went to the house and no blinds. Turned out the address was mistyped by the vendor as 'Road' instead of 'Street' with same house number etc. When I drove over, there were my 14m sets of blinds....safely behind a locked gate! I could see them but not get at them. The owner of the house, nice person that she was, called me because my cell number was on the label and I picked them up.

Olychick, I'm puzzled as to why you didn't just contact the vendor. I would never wrestle misdelivered heavy packages around myself, that's not my job and certainly not your responsibility! What was your reason for not letting the seller or delivery company take care of their mistake?

FedEx left a cardboard box of wallpaper at our gate and I saw it coming home from work just as it was starting to rain. That was $1000 of wallpaper that would have been ruined if I had come home an hour later.

Oh brother, kswl. I thought they alway leave packages in plastic bags on rainy days.

One thing I do find very unsettling is that I find I live with a constant sense of not being able to count on others to "do the right thing" and be reliable. I don't mean to open a can of worms here, but I think we have so much self-absorption in our society that it's turned pathological and has lead to little thinking about how our actions affect others. I had another package delivered on Thursday, but after I'd left. Not as big a deal, and I don't worry about theft at my house, but still, Ididn't want it sitting out until Sunday afternoon. I asked my 14 year old neighbor if she's scoot over and throw in inside my front door. I have a code on that door specifically for her (her birthday). she said, "Sure!". I texted her when the package and arrived to let her know it was there. Next day she texted back to say she couldn't find it but it was "kind of dark". No problem, I texted back. It's there.

When I got home Sunday evening, there it was, still outside, right by the front door (thankfully in plastic packaging).

Sorry, but that package would have been inside her house the night it arrived when I was 14 having said I'd get it. I would have gone home and gotten a flashlight if I had to. But she never even went back to fulfill her commitment. I love, love, love this kid, but it seems she needs to learn to follow through. So much of that now. "Got to get back to my life so I can't help you out."

I find people so unreliable now. It frustrates me.

busy, Chispa explained that "signature on file" means that that homeowner has given FedEx a permanent signature so that they don't have to be home to sign for a delivery. So that would explain why FedEx left the package without a human being signing for it. It also likely means it's sitting outside somewhere. Rain is on the back step, though, so I'm going to go out now and see if I can't spot it somewhere on my road. The road name I would think would be impossible to get wrong.

I hope it finds its way to you very soon. That would drive me bonkers, although there's little else to be done but wait until Fed Ex can either get it straightened out, or whomever has it decides to let you know.

We still have terrible issues with our USPS mail delivery, despite visiting the branch in person and calling them to let them know we actually exist. For quite some time, they apparently didn't think our address was "real" and things would go undelivered, just festering at the post office I presume. Now we typically get mail for residents on the street behind us, and on Saturday we received an overnight envelope for a house one block down. The real kicker is that on several occasions we have received mail for someone in a city 20 miles NW of us, and it's not even remotely similar to our address.

I think these workers are high, and this convinces me to transact as little business as possible by USPS.

USPS and UPS have the code to our gated driveway. I recently gave it to the FedEx guy since he was the only one showing up time and time again. In the past, or if it's a different person, FedEx will leave in plastic bag tied to call box. What drives me nuts is USPS Sunday delivery (why?!) we occasionally receive from Amazon. I leave gate open if I know it's coming, but DH closes if he goes out to let dogs roam. I'll check the status online and it says "attempted delivery" when they haven't even been here. >:( So I have stopped ordering anything on Friday's that might possibly be delivered on a Sunday.

Tib, I hope FedEx finds your delivery. If not, be sure to call your credit card company as well.

Come to think of it, the only delivery we have never had a problem with is Amazon same-day, that comes by private courier. In my experience, those drivers rock.

busybee...no, I have not given FedEx my signature so they may deliver packages that need to be signed for even if I'm not there.

Also, this package does need a signature in order to be delivered. That is why they left the sticky notice on my door saying they had attempted a delivery but no one was there to sign for it.

Apparently when they made the second attempt to deliver it yesterday, not only did they take it to the wrong address, apparently that address has a signature on file so that FedEx may leave packages even if they are packages requiring signature.

I did leave my signature on the door. Their sticky note notifying you of an attempted delivery has a box at the bottom which you can sign so that, when they attempt the second (or more) delilvery, they now have a signature from you. I signed it on Monday morning @ 9:30 and put the note back on the door.

Problem is, they delivered it at 7:41 a.m., so two hours before I put the note with my signature on it back on the door, and they delivered it to the wrong address.

I just did a spin up and down my street and up and down a street nearby that has the same first word in it, but had no luck. FedEx is going to have to resolve this.

    Sigh.

TR, I love the USPS. I think it's pretty amazing what they do. For less than 50 cents, you can get a letter across the country to a pinpoint spot. I think it's a very good deal! I also expect mistakes when people are moving that kind of volume. I'd be making them left and right! ;-o.

Allison, thank you. I suspect FedEx will take care of this one way or another. I am going to notify the seller of what is going on.

  • chispa

Yes, you need to notify the seller because the shipping order is between seller and FedEx, so they have to go after FedEx for a missing package, not you.

Any word on your package? I've had good luck with both UPS and Fed Ex. In fact, UPS will call my cell phone when they leave a package. With FedEx, I have them leave anything (even large items) at a fed ex store I drive by on my way home from work. I've never had anything stolen, but I figure that helps minimize the risk.

This isnt really a fedex/ups story, but involves shipping. When I bought my house a few years ago, I ordered two miele ovens from a large online appliance store. One of them arrived dented. I called the online store, who was gracious enough to send two more out. Then two more arrived! I had six ovens sitting in my gutted unoccupied house! I called them a couple times to tell them about their mistake. After a couple months of no one coming to pick them up, I started fantasize about selling them on cl. I decided to give them one last chance and called and was very persistent that someone come get them. They finally sent a truck. I do think it's to the store's good credit that they replaced them right away, no questions asked.

Vey nice, Tibbie! I 'm so glad that it arrived ok. As for Fed Ex, I've had so many problems with them in the past that it had become a bit of a nightmare. I finally did some very in-depth research as to who was in charge everywhere, and wrote a detailed letter of complaint to the Fed Ex regional manager of customer relations, with a copy to the local manager. I sent it certified (?) and it had to be signed by that person when they received it. The regional manager called me the day he received it. Then the local manager called me a few hours later to make an appointment for a face to face interview and apology with him and our delivery guy. Things have been perfect with Fed Ex ever since . . . thank goodness!

Good looking console Tibbrix, so glad it finally got to you. I'm in the same boat with TR on the USPS misdelivery thing (maybe it's a Texas thing), we get other people's mail regularly, once a couple months ago I got everyone's mail with the same house number but different street names, I couldn't figure out why I had such unusual mail until I looked at all the names and streets.

We also get plenty of late mail (which probably went to someone else and they threw it back in the box to be redelivered) or just never get expected mail, but now the other deliverers have seem to caught the virus, this past year has been especially bad, UPS, FEDEX, doesn't matter, first attempt usually goes to someone else, no one in particular, it's like they just throw a dart and that's who gets the package.

I've decided to stop ordering anything and just shop locally, I can't take the stress when it's happening so constantly. Maybe if others do the same and business starts slowing down they may decide to hire people who actually care about the job they do. I know that's living in dreamland but I'm rather done with this silliness.

Thank you all! I am loving it, esp. now that I have the chair at its corner back in place, the little "Tiffany" next to it on...much more homey than it looks in the pic above. I wish the door opened a little more smoothly than it does, but I suspect this thing would have cost $1500 if it were made more along those lines. But it really is perfect. Perfect height for the TV, really perfect width, goes great with the mirror...very, very happy. An added bonus is that the heating vent underneath it is no longer blocked like it was by the other chest that was there.

I know the pic doesn't do it justice. But my mother, who is living with me now, and I were wowing all night last night, what a huge, and better, difference it makes. It makes the room feel, and look, much more open and clean, lighter (weight-wise), and the TV is at the perfect viewing heigh now. I had a very small LED TV before, 26", because I'm not a fan of the big TVs (although, that has changed. Ugh) and I kept it on a small side table and would move it around, esp. when I had rowdy dogs in the house. No more of that nonsense. The bigger (mom's) TV is safe and secure now, can stay where it is, and it no longer blocks the mirror.

I also really like that it's open at the bottom, not covering the floor. Surprised by how much I like that difference.

    Yay!

Well you sure chose the right one. It's great when things turn out "just right".

Here's a pic which represents the "scene" better. Those are my Prosperity Hens hanging down my wall; my little bird sitting on the mirror shutter.

Now we can put this thread to rest.

Great news that the mystery has been solved. The console looks beautiful in that spot. I had to look up "prosperity hens" to see exactly what you were talking about. Learn something new here almost every day!
