Project plan for kitchen remodel?

Hi there. I need to do everything in my kitchen except move walls (I consider myself lucky in this regard!) - plumbing, electrical work, cabinets, countertops, lights, and soffits need removing/ceiling fixing. I was wondering at what point I can order the cabinets. Since my cabinets go all the way to the ceiling, do I have to basically do everything since I need the ceiling and floor done before I can get an accurate height? And for the floor to be done I need the plumbing done, and might as well do the electrical at the same time. So that is basically everything before I can order?

Lead time for cabs is 7 weeks, plus the time needed to do the plumbing, floor and ceiling. I've heard of people washing their dishes in the bath but I imagine this getting old quickly. Is there any way I can rig a few cabinets up to do some basic cooking? My dining room is adjacent to the kitchen so I have space.

No. Remember, your cabinets have to be installed level and plumb, no matter what your floors and ceiling are doing. I'd check each with a water level or laser and if you're out excessively on either, I'd calculate what the dimensions will be after the fix and finishes. Leave a little play.

You should be able to rig up your old cabinets, sink, and countertops into the dining room without too much trouble. It'll be worth it.

Thanks Joseph. What do I do with the "little play" when everything is said and done? Are there any solutions for gaps between the cabinets and the ceiling apart from crown molding?

Houseful-thanks for all the detailed pictures! So cool how you have transformed that space! This house is in Arcadia, we are currently in the East Valley. So...one thing we are playing with is the idea of keeping the original flooring. That requires moving as few walls as possible to keep repairs/replacements to a minimum. So that is informing the following ideas: I am currently toying with the idea of having a doorway from the library to the kitchen that lines up with the doorway to the dining room. With both the kitchen/library and kitchen/dining walls being half walls opened up above the lower cabs, if that makes sense. So I could see out the dining room windows at a sink and the library window at a cooktop possibly. Lining up the doorways would direct traffic through the kitchen but maybe that would be okay since my work area would be all on one side of the doorways? If we did this you would be able to see the backyard from the library and view out the front from the dining room... Rosie-the garden room was not built according to the plans and is just a room with a huge skylight...I was thinking of keeping it, but with half walls so when you enter the house you can see through it to the back windows...I was thinking of making it a small play room with a couch under the skylight. (Skylight is quite long and narrow along the wall opposite the door). A friend of mine has a reading couch under a skylight and it is magical to stretch out and read there during rainstorms... I like the idea of the kitchen in the middle, I think...Now, it is desirable to do less for the flooring reason, but I want to think big and I would love ideas that grab space from anywhere, really. We are mere days into months of planning so my initial thoughts may change dramatically. I would love to tear out as little as possible but I am open to considering it nonetheless!

I think I would delete the dinette table in your "trying out" and thinking stage.....push the island toward the table area and make it bigger with a circular end area for your theoretical day to day seating around.....You have a formal dining room just adjacent to the kitchen and what you have left is an island crammed in the kitchen with not too roomy seating capacity and then a dinette table in a really large part of sq footage that people probably will be walking by back and forth from kitchen/family room when you complete this.Kitchen islands can incorporate wonderful seating....your space seems like it is asking for a bigger/grander island, IMO. Search Houzz for "large kitchen island with seating".....

Interior design is very much about design...which is much more than decorating. Much much more. But I'd meet with a builder first. General contractor. To understand better what your options are, given your specific place, scope of the project, etc. Maybe something like design-build firm? They usually will have both a builder and a designer. You're not moving walls but you're looking into moving plumbing..a good GC will be able to say what's possible and to make initial suggestions. And I'd get several opinions of course.

Using a spacer and setting it back in from the edge of cabinetry is the way most will do it. This spacer could be 5/8", 3/4" or whatever. Figure out how much your ceiling deviates from one side to the other. If it is more than a 1/4" you will probably notice it when using a thinner spacer. Using a wider spacer will allow you to scribe the spacer so that the edge that meets the ceiling follows the deviation and the straight edge meets the cabinetry.

Also, don't assume that "7 weeks lead time" is a sure thing. Even if it turns out to be correct, there might be some problem(s) with the cabinets that require re-work and more time. Better to order sooner rather than later, in my opinion.

I was hired to help a guy install some frameless cabinets that the customer wanted mounted all the way to the ceiling. The problem was, the ceiling was way crooked. You can have your cabinets touch the ceiling at its lowest point and fill the ever-widening gap with some sort of tapered trim or you can have the ceiling leveled before you start, but you cannot have cabinets installed flush to a seriously out-of-level ceiling.

Oh, and they must hang plumb too, or the cabinet door may strike the ceiling as its opened. You never forget the first time this happens, believe me. A customer will probably never notice a line of caulk taking up a "little play", but she'll notice the door hitting the ceiling undoubtably.
