My four cherokee purple plants came from tomatoes I grew last summer, that came from a tomato I ate in NC the summer before. Last year I had a huge yield from 4 plants. This year, all 4 plants have been stricken with leaves curling up, new and larger leaves. Leathery, really curly little leaves and curled (up) larger leaves. Some small brown spots on larger, older leaves, no yellowing, no dead edges. Growing conditions are ditto to last year. Plants leaves are stunted, growth is stunted. You can see through the plants and overall, the leaves are small yep, and curled. I was told to use Happy Frog fertilizer due to calcium shortage. I don't think this will work. I am going to spray for fungus AND insects. These tomatoes are the best I ever ate, and I've eaten a lot of them. No more seeds available. I should have saved a few.

No expert here, but was wondering where you got the soil recipe you are using? At first glance the peat/topsoil mix might be water retentive and possibly cause the yellowing of the leaves, and stunting growth. A good container mix, 5-1-1, pine bark, peat, perlite, is recommended over on the Growing in Containers forum. Without a good foundation to work from, it's hard to make any other suggestions, like feeding. My first impression without knowing about your mix, was that they are not getting enough sun, the Early Girl is too leggy. If you can get your hands on some pine bark mulch and a little garden lime, you can make an awesome, well draining, container growing mix. You already have the peat and perlite.

The "primary" nutrients all plants need to varying degrees are nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium. Without those nutrients supplied in some form anything else makes little to no difference. Neither peat nor coir supply any of those nutrients. Most brands of fish emulsion supplies all 3 in small amounts. That is why plants normally get transplanted to a growing medium of some sort that contains those nutrients. " though the plugs are bigger ones and lasted for a good 6 weeks last year. Seedlings are just over 4 weeks old at this point." Yeah I know the size of the plug flats you are using. We use many of them in the nursery but for germination and growth only to the first true leaf stage. Then they get transplanted so that feeder root development can begin and you begin to supply them with a diluted form of nutrients. Dave
