srg15, if you would like crown molding in the rest of your kitchen but don't want to pay the high cost charged by the cabinet company, here's an alternative. Check on the cost of having a local shop custom make a crown that will match your cabinet crown molding. For us, there was a setup charge of about $150 for the lumber company to cut a blade that matched our cabinet crown molding, then there was the cost of cutting the matching crown molding and the cost of the lumber. Ours was to be painted so we did a paint grade wood. It looks great, perfectly matches the cabinet crown molding and its total cost was 25% of the cost of crown molding supplied by our cabinet company.

So, it's 15 ft from window to fireplace? Is that the entry to the left of the fireplace in the last pic? That first pic Rawketgrl posted shows the seating area on an angle. That might work well in your room so that the piano and fireplace can be the focal points. An upholstered chair and table can to go on the end by the window. I like Acm's idea to bring in a game table, which can be just to display a few things if you want. The couch can be perpendicular to the fireplace, with the bookshelves behind it and couple of chairs facing the fireplace. Or, turned 90 so that the couch faces the fireplace. Chairs on one side, or both, depending on the room available. A table can be by the windows for display of some pretty things or used for games. Plants, tables w/ lamps to fill in the holes. A large rug will anchor your floating seating area. My combo family/living room is similar in size to yours. My seating area floats in the middle facing the fireplace, which is on the long wall. The back of my couch faces the entry because the shorter direction didn't give me enough room for my couch and tables. Around the perimeter is a huge lighted cabinet, a table with lamp, and two dressers that hold music/media with the tv on top.

The door is to the backyard yes. I am definitely debating between the last two. The sofa facing the tv is comfortable for viewing but the fireplace looks best with the two chairs framing and everything fits. May move the sofa table behind the couch when we get an actual tv stand. You guys have been a great help. Side note how close can things go to the fireplace. Example can there be drapes on those windows or would that be too close?

Before you can decide on seating you need to design based on a balance of what you need every day, what you need when you have guests, how often you need the additional seating and the activities that will be done when you need the additional seating. Example: Typically I have 2 people watching TV or playing board games in the evening. About once every two weeks I have 4 people. A 5 person sectional with an additional chair works for both board games or TV. About once every 2 months I will host dinner for my siblings and spouses - then I have 10 people, but the girls usually hang in the kitchen, dining room and the guys go watch TV. Still works. About once a year I have the whole family over for some kind of function. That will be 30 people. I didn't plan my seating for 30. I have a couple of rooms that have seating and we end up a bit scattered. I have enough seating if people use the livingroom, dining room, sitting room and I pull extra chairs that I have in the bedrooms and store in the basement. We just kind of muddle through. In the two years that I have lived here I have not once needed more than 6 seats for watching a movie. My sister entertains a lot and has a large number of guests at one time on a regular basis. She has a great room with a dining table that seats 12, bench seating under her window wall that butts against her corner fireplace, a 4 person couch with a chaise plus 3 recliners and another small bench that she will place in front of the fireplace and an ottoman that can go in front of the TV for addional seating. She also has several shallow boxes that fit over her TV so that it looks like wall art instead of a TV. Knowling your needs really helps define the amount and type of seating you need.
