Preparing a defense against narcissus bulb fly

Here in zone 6b, my potted bulbs are (almost!) all waiting their chance to go outdoors. I've been lucky so far, avoiding an attack of narcissus bulb fly/NBF for so long.

I'm going to start dosing all the bulbous plants with a strong systemic insecticide before they go outside--I've become a little paranoid about NBF, so there'll be a little poison in the soil too. Apparently the adult fly is around through early July, and the first nibble of a treated bulb should also be their last. I hope!

My understanding is that systemic poisons take at least 6 weeks to be fully absorbed into all of the bulb tissues, since those tissues are dense, and often persist for several years.

Has anyone here had success/failure with this method? Comments?
