Give our (soon to be) house some curb appeal! (Pic)
Comments (14)Congratulations on your new house! This is really exciting. We purchased this house last year and, like you, before closing we were already planning away on what we'd do to the front. This is a picture of our relandscaping I think the day it was completed; as it's nighttime now I cannot take a more lush photo (the plants have filled out amazingly in just one year!), but I'm including it because what I really want you to see is the curving front walk. (ours has steps but you can still do a curving flat or slightly sloped walk) Ours is brick pavers and Colorado rose flagstone, but I've seen beautiful stamped concrete and other foot-friendly materials. If you're in an area where you have to shovel snow, keep that in mind when choosing your material -- you don't want your shovel to get caught! In this (planned) community, the houses only have paths to the front door from the tops of their driveways, which I find really unwelcoming! There are only a handful of us who've put in walkways but I'll tell you, driving around I always find I smile at the houses with dedicated walkways to the sidewalk (inc. ours!) because I just get a friendly feel from them. I love and second teacats suggestions for undulating beds -- they are so attractive and lush! There are so many low-maintenance but showy plants out there -- but so much of the selection depends on your (micro) climate. I'd like to suggest you visit the Gardening forum for your area -- really knowledgeable, helpful people are there, and they can help you pick out the right plants for your garden, or at the least, give you a great list for when you go to your nursery! I also love kswl's color suggestions, but that may be because we had ours painted with those v. colors last summer .... Congratulations on your new home!...See MoreHelp me add some curb appeal to our home
Comments (6)It's not a great picture for getting constructive feedback. It would be better if you move the camera a little to the left so people can see the complete entrance. And then pan the camera from far left to far right taking OVERLAPPING pictures that include the neighbors' houses, which are part of the surroundings for your house. Also, move the camera to the city sidewalk so you are not quite as far away. Landscaping and street appeal is about coordinating all these things together .... not just what's directly in front of your house. That said, I can make a few comments about your existing landscaping: The entrance is weak ... barely a cave-like slit set far back compared to the broad expanse of the garage door. One way to improve it is to create a much larger path to it ... a path capable of allowing two people to walk side-by-side to the entrance. Creating it with some decorative qualities would be a plus. I would change out the plants flanking the garage door to something smaller, possibly more colorful, and something that grew in a more "arrangement"-like fashion. Smothering the base of the house and hiding windoes with a single hedge is not a particularly handsome solution. I think it would be better to coordinate shrubs with architectural features and incorporate some other plant types ... color, small tree, perennials, etc. Need better pictures to explore possibilities. It might be that the foreground tree will eventually not allow grass to be grown well. At that point, it would be necessary to place a groundcover bed around the tree ... a proportionately sized one, not a tutu. I wish someone had cut off the lower limb when it was 1/2" diameter instead of allowing it to grow into a competing trunk. We can't see if it could still be removed....See MoreSuggestions for giving this house some curb appeal
Comments (5)Landscaping would help a lot. You have a nice big area with some shrubs all bunched together on the right side near the garage. Depending on what they are, I'd remove them or at least some of them. I'd plant some additional flowers and or low growing shrubs there instead of the grass. I'd also plant some small flowering tree to mask that expanse of brick on the left. I'm guessing there is a matching window that we don't see. I'd get rid of the shutters on the larger windows. They are too small for the window size. Do you plan on painting the siding? The white really contrasts with the brick in a not good way. I'd paint the siding a different color that is more similar to the brick and the garage door the same color....See Moreplease help me add some curb appeal to our home!! Any ideas welcome
