Comparing Room and Board, Vanguard, Arhaus and Flexteel

I'm at the end of our new construction, and of course we are now trying to tighten the purse strings on furniture. I've gotten a quote for a Vanguard sectional with matching chairs from my designer, which is the highest priced sectional of all four of these choices. However, my designer thinks that they are the best quality compared to the other brands. I really love the look of Room and Board furniture, but am concerned that the interiors are not solid wood, but rather veneer (which also has formaldehyde). Arhaus is kind of in the middle price point of Room and Board and Vanguard, but the wait is something like 12 weeks, and would love to have our living room done when we move in! However, they seem to have very high quality furniture for a good price, and are very eco-friendly which I like. Flexteel - haven't gotten the quote back yet, but I hear they are good quality and good price. I have four small kids and this furniture will get a ton of use - and maybe some spillage too, which conflicts me on getting something that will withstand four kids but yet not cost too much to replace if they destroy it with stains. would appreciate some help!

Room & Board products are definitely not "lower end." I often feel like that is designer-speak for "they have a showroom and thus you don't need a designer to buy it." I'm confused, meganmcdougal, by your description of Room & Board furniture as "veneer." Many of their products are solid hardwood. Just depends on the piece. They work with a variety of craftsmen, and all their products are made in the U.S. That's basically their business philosophy -- American craft.

We have a Room & Board recliner, daybed, four dining chairs and two barstools, as well as a side table. All have held up quite well. Yes, the legs of the dining chairs have gotten scratched, and there's a ding in the side table. That is called "life." It is also called "American cherry," which is a softer wood and scratches more easily.

As far as upholstery, I have just one word for you: ultrasuede. We have some chairs from a New England-based company called Pompanoosuc Mills that were covered in an ultrasuede and my youngest spilled GLUE on one of them last week... I didn't discover it until it dried, but after a couple of rounds of "Nature's Miracle" and some scrubbing it looks perfect. These days you can get ultrasuede in patterns -- some even have a bit of raised texture. It's a great fabric for upholstery. Let the pillows provide pattern & texture for the most part, but use ultrasuede on the expensive (big) upholstered pieces.

Don't let a designer talk you into something that you don't love. You will have these items in your house longer than you think, if they're even mid-priced. My mother-in-law always says there are only two types of furniture: (1) "Walk away" furniture, that you can just leave in the house/apartment when you move, and (2) "Forever" furniture. It's a bit of an exaggeration, but her point is that when you compromise on something in between these two poles, you are likely to not really enjoy it but keep it around (because it isn't "walk away" furniture, after all)... and you will regret it. Only buy "walk away" or "forever" furniture.

I would also advise you not to worry about waiting 12 weeks for the right thing. In the end, you will not remember the wait... if it's what you want.

Vanguard is excellent upholstery & therefore the costly price sticker. It will probably take 8 to 12 weeks for production. Many people do not recommend Flexsteel & their quality may have gone down but I had Flexsteel upholstery for many years. Had to get rid of one recliner due to cat scratching it & it would have been too costly to re-upholster but I wish I had went ahead & reupholstered it. The other recliner was too big for the space I was moving to so sold it. The sofa I moved & had for many years; the fabric finally wore out. Room & Board I am not sure of but have heard their products are lower end. Also not sure of Arhaus.

We have a Flexsteel sectional in our basement (not reclining) -- it looks great but it does not get daily use.

Our sofas upstairs are Flexsteel - 7 years old. They are not perfect but I would say they have held up reasonably well. I hope to get 4 more years out of them.

Mitchel gold use three types of suspension depending on the item. They primarily us a no sag sinuous spring, which is essentially s shaped wires stretched across the frame attached by clips to the sides. They also use "Pirelli Webbing" which are bands of elasticized cloth woven in a checkerboard. The webbing suspension is used in Europe. Here it is commonly found on dining room chairs. Personally I would not choose it. What they refer to as "Rigid Sheet Webbing" is really a material called Propex. Propex is the polypropylene material used under an 8 way hand tied suspension in which the steel banding used to support the 8 way hand tied springs rest on. I have not heard of using this for a suspension. I think they just use this for small chairs and I doubt they are using this in the sectional you are looking at. I would think they are using a sinuous spring in the sectional. A Propex only suspension would be very hard on your cushions as it wouldn't give and in my opinion it would cause excess pressure on the cushions causing them to wear out. They say they used hardwoods and plywood's in their frame but they go on to say the frames are cut by a computer "C and C router". You can't cut a 5/4 hardwood frame with a router very easily so in my opinion they are predominately using a plywood frame. A hardwood frame such as Maple or Poplar or Ash is preferable and the most durable. They do talk about environmental issues in construction, a 5/4 hardwood frame is naturally good for the environment as it is just wood and does not contain any glues or manmade materials

Ah, gotcha. I misunderstood. I still do like those rooms and would consider them inspirational, at least partly. I am working around a few constraints for the room so maybe that accounts for the differences? - I need to find a chandelier that has a single round canopy, due to the way our ceiling is. In searching for a chandelier, it's been hard to find something that I think works with the room and has a single round canopy. - I really like the paned mirror in the first inspo room, but I'm looking to put one of those in the foyer. - I would like to find an affordable table that looks like the first inspo pic. I'm searching a local store's inventory for the table and chairs to find something we could potentially really get (and afford) instead of incorporating a picture of the *perfect* table that I don't know the make/price of. - I would also like to use parsons chairs for all of the seats, but I already have two and doubt I'd be able to match them easily to another 6. I think a contrasting chair type would be a better fit because of that. In the second insp pic I like how the room is generally neutral but has subtle color to it. I like the lantern light fixtures in that room but realize they won't work for my space. I also like the artwork in the room and I could use something like in my room in place of the circular mirrors. For my room, I knew I wanted to find a rug with a neutral base that had a few bits of accent color. The accent colors in the rug shown in the mock-up might be more vivid than I pictured in my mind, but I think they work. I also like the idea of an oriental rug that's not so traditional. I hope that helps explain?!? Maybe those rooms aren't exact inspirations. I'm still on the lookout for room designs to help guide me. My unusual dining room doesn't make it easy to compare online dining rooms to my own.

It’s especially fun when a communication connection is made between the OA & one or more of the responders. I did read from the first reply to you and I’m right there with you. I also was quite taken aback at a response to my first post for kitchen changes help - I know one needs a thick skin at times but it still stung! On the flip side, I’ve decided all of the Houzzers mean well even when they comment on points not relevant to the OA’s request, and I’ve read some wonderful ideas & gotten some really helpful info from answers to other people’s home challenges. Rather than ultrasuede I would look in to a new fabric, Crypton. They have a website & there are many upholstery manufacturers that are carrying their fabrics.

I bought a sofa and sectional from Arhaus -- both in custom fabrics when they had a sale where they were offered for the same price or $100 more than the stock choices. I am very happy with them -- very solidly built and well upholstered. I'm not sure about all the chairs, but I was told that all the sofas and sectionals are built by two different companies in NC. The sectional has 8 way hand tied support, down wrapped cushions and all the nice details.

We have a Flexsteel sofa with power recliners in our gameroom -- we bought it at a clearance center (DH and I can't remember, but I'm thinking the price was around $800 -- it had been scraped on delivery and someone tried to touch up the finish -- badly. I was able to remove a lot of the excess color and blend it in where no one notices it now). It was a great find for our teen boys to enjoy while watching TV, gaming and such, but it is nowhere near the same caliber as what we bought from Arhaus.

I can't help you with the other two.

R&B furniture looks nice but for what they charge for their pieces, you'd think you're getting a higher quality item. They do not offer one single sofa style with a hardwood frame. They are all glued and stapled plywood frames with either webbing or steel "S" springs. They do have nice upholstery options and some of the leather is downright sumptuous.
