Japanese maple leaves are dead

I bought a tiny Japanese maple last winter and pit it in a pot in my kitchen a few weeks ago it got some green leaves on it but now all these leaves have wilted and are completely dead any advice ?

Japanese maples do not fair very well when grown indoors - they are not houseplants. Would assume the indoor conditions are just not close to what it wants with regards to light, temperatures and humidity.

Is there a reason it cannot be grown outside?

I didn't want to plant it in garden as I don't want a big tree so pottin is was better for me so it will stay small

Wait a bit longer - the damage to various JMs around here went from a few injured leaves to complete defoliation, depending on the tree and the location. Some have begun to grow new leaves and some are still sitting there. As long as the cambium - the layer right under the bark - is still green when you scratch lightly on a twig, the tree is alive. You may have some tip die-back to trim off, but the tree itself should be fine. Most trees have auxilliary buds; they will grow and leaf out soon. Wait until the leaves are clearly growing before you do any trimming, and be careful of the emerging leaves. Resist the temptation to clean off the old leaves, unless you did it straight away - you might damage the emerging buds. Water the tree well, but don't drown it, as JMs don't like standing in water. And don't fertilize until the tree has almost all the leaves out, and then lightly with a slow release fertilizer.

Buds should be present NOW, even if a bit too early to leaf out. JM buds are formed in fall and should continue to develop through winter and swell in spring. You can check to see if any viable buds are present by looking at the stems and seeing the paired growth nodes - these are where the buds should be. Gently rub one off and see if the tissue is green and healthy or brown and dry. Brown and dry is not good :-( Any adventitious buds appearing from the base will most likely be rootstock, not the named form grafted on top. And that may or may NOT be what you want :-)

The topic is Japanese maple trees, not tender non-woody annual or perennial plants like tomatoes or sunflowers!! The reaction to herbicide drift will be very different between the two types of plants. One will react to the herbicide virtually overnight with browning, drying and death. The other will not die unless it is directly sprayed with herbicide and even something like gylphosate or concentrated brush killer will take multiple applications to kill an established woody plant like a tree. This is not supposition but fact......documented by literature and confirmed by several decades as a professional horticulturist!

It doesn't need to be planted in the ground to be outside. You can grow the tree in a container - many, many folks do so with JM's. It just cannot live indoors.

It may not have to, depending on where you are located. JM's in containers remain outdoors year round in my climate :-) But if you are in a colder area, you want to wait until the tree is dormant (dropped all its leaves) and then move to a location where it will stay cool (below 45F) but above freezing. Some place like a garage or unheated basement. Light is not an issue when dormant but some watering is necessary just to keep the roots hydrated.

But don't move it into the living areas indoors - they are far too warm.
