Good news with phosphate-free DW detergent
Comments (15)Just did a "test" on Finish Powerball Tabs vs. Method Smarty Tablets. OK, this was not scientific at all, it's just my impressions on two different loads of dishes on 2 nights. So, please, no challenging about methodology, exact number of dishes, exact same amount of food on the dishes, and the like. The DW is KA KUDS40. Both loads had my family's typical home-cooked meals' remains, some of it dried-on. We scrape, but don't rinse. Both loads had the usual glasses, coffee mugs, bowls, silverware, etc. Both loads were full. As to cleanability, both detergents cleaned identically well. Everything came out spotless, except a glass with dried-on milk in both loads. So, the differences between the two detergents come down to ease-of-use and packaging. Method Smarty Tablets wins in that respect because its packaging is a resealable bag that takes up no room under the sink, each Smarty Tablet comes without wrapping, and each Smarty Tablet is easy to break if you'd need to do a half-load. The Finish Powerball is in a bulky (by comparison) box, and each tab is a PITA to unwrap, and don't even try if you have wet hands. As already mentioned in this thread, there are issues with the Powerball if you just want to use a half tab. I also liked, as Kaismom mentioned, that Smarty Tablets are free of bleach, dyes and perfumes. Price-wise though, Finish Powerball Tabs wins. If you want to buy in bulk, I saw a box of 100 in Costco for about $20. Walmart has Finish Powerball box of 32 for $5.97. I have only seen Method Smarty Tablets in the 20-count bag, which is an inconveniently small number, and seems to cost $5.99 everywhere. HTH!...See MoreNew detergent versus new DW
Comments (1)Dishwasher detergents containing chlorine help defend against staining from tomato sauces. No chlorine, staining is more likely to occur. IIRC, chlorine and enzymes don't get along, so an enzyme formula won't include chlorine. Enzymes tend to clean better in dishwashers nowadays that operate at lower water volume and longer time (sometimes also lower temperatures in the new HE units), so that's a trade-off against not having chlorine. One of the brands (Cascade, perhaps) has/had a specific product for occasional use in cleaning stained plastics, check for it at your local store....See MoreFWIW-Consumer Reports new detergent ratings
Comments (35)This is an interesting convo going on here. I am a tried and true powder person. I have tried liquids over the years w/o a whole lot of success. Not sure if it's our water softener or what. I just recently purchased my first box of Persil and I am loving it so far. I wanted to give it a try before my new washer came so I would know if it was the detergent or the machine. With every other variable the same, the Persil is doing a better job for me than Sears, Charlies or homemade did. I haven't used Tide in years do to the scent. All of my clothes have been coming out soft, I don't use softener. They look, feel and smell clean and it's the first time I could ever say "blinding white". Now I will grant you that some of those whites are brand new, so the jury is out on how long they will stay that way. I've never had luck w/whites no matter what I do. I've boil washed, warm washed, different detergents etc. I truly believe that some issues are related to water quality. I also think the water difference are why different individuals love different detergents. When, and if I start having issues w/Persil, I may look into the Tide Totalcare and take another stab at a liquid. Thanks everyone for sharing your input....See MoreConsumer Reports New Laundry Detergent Ratings
Comments (48)Mama and little...the reason I ask about detergent is that my twin boys are 14 now and I am noticing that their clothes are "smelly" even after washing. I think I may try the tide free powder and the booster pods with the whites and see how that goes. I didn't know there was a All f & c oxi. Is it liquid or powder? Maybe that would be a better choice for my stinky boys clothes. my Speed Queen is in our basement. We are living in my dh's childhood home temporarily until we build. The w/d will stay with this house when the new house is done. It's a good set. thank you for the advice....See Moremamapinky0
