The Louisville, KY, public library was the first place recipient of the 2016 LibraryAware Community Award given by Library Journal and LibraryAware. The award recognizes a library system that has demonstrated its ability
to engage with its community and make citizens aware of what the library
can do for them.

Just thought I would brag a little.

Whoa! ootockalockatuvik_7a, I recognize what you are saying -- even that it's true too often, I'm afraid. But I'm not so cynical to think it's true everywhere!

Carolyn, that sounds good to me! Congratulations to the Louisville public library system.

I deleted my comment. I have librarians in the family. Sad state libraries/we are in. Used to be a start for young people to learn and seek help, typically new young homeowners needing advice. Now a place for free internet and bathroom. Sorry to change the post's demeanor. I loved my childhood libraries. Congratulations and patron the hell out of that place if it is still good!

Whoa, that's some room! Thanks for posting the additional photo, jqchen... completely changes my initial impression of the room. You say you want to have the whole house painted before moving in, which is practical, but from a decorating point of view, it makes life harder for you. You say you don't have furniture for this room yet. If you choose a color first, you will then have to choose everything else -- rugs, upholstery, furniture, drapes -- based on that color. That approach limits your options so much! "I fell in love with these chairs / this rug / this whatever / but it doesn't go with the wall color..." Is it possible to postpone choosing the wall color for awhile? It's so much more fun shopping for furniture and rugs when you're not constricted by wall color. The painters will always tell you to paint the walls before bringing in furniture -- because it makes life easier FOR THEM. Not for YOU. I gotta ask, what's going on with that ceiling? Is it a chambered ceiling? A tray? Are there other windows? LOOOOOVE THE ROOM, by the way. Are you keeping the wall-to-wall carpeting?

marti, I have seats for 5 in the room now and can bring in extra chairs from the kitchen as needed. The table has a leaf. We aren't big-dinner-party types so usually the biggest number of people at our table is 6. (That's all we had room for when we had the traditional dining table and chairs.) When we have more than that, we do an informal buffet and people eat scattered around the kitchen (which has kitchen table plus island and stools) and dining room. I know it wouldn't work for everyone but for us, this is a much better use of the dining room space that sat empty 90% of the time.

I agree with the thought of buying cookbooks. Can't do without a classic like "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" by Julia Child, I think there's two volumes (her biography is good too). The Martha Stewart Living cookbooks are incredible, I've never had anything out of those books not turn out fabulous. Cole's "Cooking A to Z" is an awesome technical book that any novice can follow and learn from. The Foodnetwork stars cookbooks are popular, but they tend to be faddish so I don't know how long they would stay current in circulation. The best in my opinion would be the ones by Paula Deen, Ina Garten, and Giada DeLaurentis, following them is Tyler Florence and Rachael Ray who are very popular with the younger crowd. If you like Louisiana style cooking Emeril is for you, but I'm not personally fond of his recipes. Other non-foodnetwork cookbooks I love are by Sarah Foster and Nigella Lawson (her "How to Eat" is the best one). Of course we can't leave out the "Cook's Illustrated" cookbooks, they possible have the best test kitchen in America and the cookbooks are fabulous. I forbid you to buy any cookbooks by Sandra Lee or Robin Miller, those aren't "cookbooks".

No need to wait for death to contribute to your library. I've contributed to some local ones for a number of years, earlier by cheque, which came from bank account, fed by pensions and return on investments - all of which had been taxed. After-tax money contributed to charities is worthwhile. But. A few years ago I transferred investments that had appreciated in value to a charity, received a receipt for the full current value (of about $100.00 per share) and had them forward various amounts to a couple of dozen charities. As I'd paid less than $4.25 per share, had I sold them, there'd have been a capital gain of about $95.80 and I'd have been taxable at regular rate on half of that, just under $48.00. As a gift to a charity, that capital gain was tax free. I've continued to follow that path for several years. The new library in Perth, Western Australia has finally opened and I hope to check it out tomorrow. The pix look magnificent. We have been waiting for a dedicated library for a very long time. The library has been in temporary places all over the CBD!

Well done to your library Carolyn.

Here in the UK funding to libraries has taken quite a knock in the last few years and I notice in our county system far fewer new books are available. The shelves are mostly lined with 'popular' paper-backs, lots of chick-lit and spin offs of TV series and similar.

I am able to order a book if it is within the county store for free, but when I have done this recently the books have all been in really bad condition with spines broken and pages falling out. There is always a pencilled comment inside saying "Broken spine noted" . .. do they no longer have the wherewithal to repair books I wonder?

A question to the several of you who used to work in libraries or were trained as librarians " Were you expected to 'mend' books or did your library have some system to send books to be repaired?"

I notice the old books I occasionally borrow, some printed in the 1930's/40's are well-bound with the covers sewn rather than glued on.

Vee, I mended books as part of my rostered duties at the public library. If done carefully, it is very time consuming and there was always a pile which never seemed to grow smaller. I would pick the ones that were most in use to repair first.

When I later worked in a University the eleven different libraries sent books to be mended to a bookbinder. As they were valuable non-fiction, they were checked in and out.

I worked in several libraries in the past. In one, I was expected to mend books in a rudimentary sense. In another, damaged books were sent away to a special bookbinder in another city. I noticed often the spines of newer volumes would crack after only 1 or 2 readings, whereas often older volumes from the 20's and 30's were held together by tight, neat stitching that endured.

Our local library hasn't won any awards I know of, but I love it. It's in a small town and a rural area. I can order books with my computer and usually pick them up within a week. They have special programs such as a guy who brings in snakes and gives a talk about them, Phillip Gulley is going to be there to talk this week, the book club is sponsored by the library and they order the books for the members to read -- they magically turn up and are handed to us. It used to be a township library and those of us living out of the city limits had to pay for a card, but finally we managed to get it voted to be county wide so all is free. Did I mention I love the library?

Sounds great, Norar, especially for a smaller area. I have not ordered many books through Inter-Library Loan, but I have had a little trouble with it which surprises me. We don't seem to have enough books to keep there from being a long waiting list on the new or most popular books. That is blamed on not enough money from the city, which is probably true. To my dismay, the request for a new regional library and money for more books was voted down a few years ago.

Carolyn, Once I was told that the dog pound earned more money for the Council than the library! Owners had to pay to get dogs out but the libraries didn't charge a late fee at the time as it wasn't worth the bother of sending out reminder notices.

I am glad to say that the library is now a paying proposition, charging for some IT usage.
