What plants would thrive in 24" containers (deer & drought resistant)

Hello.

We bought some 24" planter containers (18.5" wide at the top) and are looking for ideas for what to plant in them. Ideally, a shrub or small tree that will grow to be at least 4'. Taller would be fine too. We need them to provide a sort of privacy screen to our yard so at least 4' tall and somewhat bushy or leafy.

The plants need to be deer resistant as there are lots of deer in the area, and drought tolerant (ideally, happy with being watered once a week in summer).

In summary:

- 4' or taller

- Somewhat bushy or leafy to provide privacy screen

- Deer resistant

- Drought resistant

I love arbor vitae but wonder if the pots are big enough for them to thrive over several years.

We are at an elevation of about 2,275' in the Sierras, not far from Yosemite.

Thanks for any suggestions.
