Comments (10)Thanks SoTX! We actually have a bunch of white quartz landscaping rock in a big pile on the other side of the shop, so that is what I'll use. It was an eyesore in the front flower beds, but will work well for greenhouse flooring. I hadn't thought about the heat sink aspect, but that would be good motivation for digging the floor out by a couple inches and adding more rock (plus, that pile will shrink more and get out of my way). Sunnibel, great idea using the clear roofing for your chooks. My coop gets too much shade in the summer as it is, my girls probably would have appreciated a clear roof (plus they can stargaze at night). Good luck working on hubby for the GH. My dad and I just started building while my DH was at work. Ask for forgiveness instead of permission, that's my motto!...See MoreBuilding a Lean-To Greenhouse
Comments (11)The gray electrical conduit pipes that we saw at home depot are pvc. In reading postings from various forums, I gathered that the gray pvc is sun resistant and the white is not and so is more likely to grow brittle. One responder indicated that pvc pipe degrades the greenhouse film. Is this problem caused by high temperatures like in the summer? Since we are in NC, and are not planning on growing anything in the greenhouse during the summer, we were planning on taking the greenhouse film down. Another question we had. We were planning on using wide greenhouse film as our covering, but were wondering if forum members had a recommendation as to the best place to purchase it. There are so many web sites that offer it. Thanks again for the comments....See MoreLean-to greenhouse recommendations?
Comments (2)We had a homemade polycarbonate greenhouse for quite some time but unfortunately we also had a collapse! We replaced it with a lovely model from Farmtek (Or is it Growers Supply) I believe they are the same company..... Anyhow, it is a cedar frame with polycarbonate covering and has been great. It is very strong and was pretty easy to build. We were missing a part from the 'kit' but they sent it out to us immediately after we called them. It is very pretty and has retained heat very well. Here is a link that might be useful: Farmtek...See MoreBig lean-to greenhouse: build or buy?
Comments (4)I have a big (30x30 ft) carport that I don't need. The roof is framed with sturdy prefab trusses spaced a few feet apart. What if I wall off the east-facing side, remove the corrugated metal roof and T-111 wall panels, and replace with polycarbonate panels? Would the structural rigidity be compromised by the loss of the metal and wood panels? If so, could I compensate by adding some wood diagonals to the frame? I don't think the wood trusses will decay, since my greenhouse will not be heated, and will be very well ventilated. Wood rot is not a problem at all in my present greenhouse, which I built 19 years ago. This idea is very attractive to me, since I would end up with a 15x30 ft. greenhouse for the cost of the polycarbonate panels plus the vents and some kind of vent opening mechanism. The carport already has a concrete floor. Has anyone tried something like this?...See Morealoebot
