There is something about the symmetry of your home that suggests a seating area, or birdbath or waterfeature would look charming on the left side under the small tree. The right side with the drop off would be perfectly OK left as is and not look off balance. Or you could plant the right side with small airy light trees like japanese maples to provide some wind break. Heavier plantings on the right will give your home a more confined look. That isnt bad if you want it to look solid and substantial. Redbuds would be pretty on the far right in the drop off, but you will be watering them for years to keep them alive in the sun until they establish. It would be nice to get some color near the porch. I like the idea of something tall in the pots - like ornamental grass, and something low and colorful near the pots. Perhaps small colorful collection of pots on the front edge of the porch filled with trailing colorful annuals or geraniums, which of course you will be watering every day in summer to keep alive. A windbreak solution I am considering for my back porch is to put a trellis, or woven screen on each side of the porch. They could be supported by a simple arbor frame of a vertical post on the right and left front corners of the porch, a cross piece on top connecting them like an arbor, and some simple framing going from the front, to the wall of the house to support them. A roof isnt needed, but abviously makes the whole thing easier to put up. You wouldnt change the front appearance of the house much, but you would have an enclosed feeling when standing on the porch. White painted wood framing with white wood trellis or black wrought iron trellis would be compatible with your home. Your house is really nice. The good thing about sun are the brilliant flowers you can show off, once you get the whole thing set up right. Shade just doesnt produce the cheerful colors like sun....See Moredecorating a screened-in porch
Comments (15)I think you should decorate in the way that makes you happy. If I lived in Alaska but found joy in a tropical themed room, wonderful! Who cares what the rules are. Personally, not fiddling and cleaning constantly and not replacing faded cushions makes me happy. I don't mind mildly uncomfortable furniture if its looks outweigh the comfort value and will put up with inconvenience to have things look the way I want them. I love twig furniture and with plenty of cushions they are very comfortable. They don't rock and twirl like a manufactured chair, but the joy of seeing them everyday outweighs the maintenance, comfort loss (minimal to me) and more frequent replacement. They don't last forever. For instance, I need to have my vacuum cleaner sitting in the middle of the floor pretty much constantly as I vacuum something daily. But I put it away in the closet to appease my aesthetics. I need to get in bed each night, but I make the bed everyday for the joy of looking at it if even for the momentary few seconds before I turn it down again in the evening. I like having a botanical garden on my screened in porch. Lots of color, some money and quite a bit of maintenance. I don't care....See Morehelp decorate my porch
Comments (13)From the photos it looks like your posts and railing are two different colours. I also think the wood stairs and skirting look unfinished. Whatever colour your posts are, I'd paint everything that colour. Railing, stairs and skirting. Attach risers and close in the sides of your stairs and paint them the same colour. Remove the pots beside your door and just have one large pot of flowers to the left of your door to balance your uncenterd door. Your porch is small so I wouldnt crowd it up with furniture that won't be used. Instead, remove the park bench and put a long backless wood bench under your window. Maybe add a pot of flowers to one end of the bench. Paint your front door a colour so it's different from your neighbours. Maybe a dark warm red? Like dark tomato soup. The wreath you have is nice but get rid of the wreath hanger and use one of those 3M removable hooks instead. Remove the garden edging and build a garden that's bigger and wraps around the house. Maybe add a decorative tree that won't get too big like a Japanese Maple....See MorePlease help me cozy up my screened porch
