Help with ottoman fabric please & a shout out to jlc712
First of all, I want to thank jlc712 for steering me towards suiting fabrics for my FR renovation last fall. Her advice led to just the right feel I was looking for: slightly rustic, slightly sophisticated, and calm. I am delighted with the new furnishings thanks to you, jlc.
So I picked up this free ottoman -- dirty, but the perfect size and leg design. What would you choose for new fabric -- color, scale of print (if any). No skirt, I think. Tufted? I don't want it to be a focal point or accent piece, just something that complements the rest of the fabrics.

Comments (19)mitchdesj, it's funny you say English style, because that is something I would really like to achieve. I think I've watched too many episodes of "Relocation, Relocation". Like Jenny says it is very RL. Oceanna, the baseboards are actually hot water radiators. They give great heat and look kind of cool to boot. They are brass under the paint and DH keeps hinting he might eventually strip them. The wall colour has been great, but we've had it for almost 10 yrs now so we are ready for a change - back to neutral. sujafr, I am really wrestling with that whole idea. I know I will love either of those florals for a few yrs but a neutral would be so much more practical. The dark floral is so distinct, it will really dictate how I can decorate. But then again, it is a style of chair that would lend itself to slipcovering down the line. Rosewind, I really appreciate your comments on the big florals always being in style. It pushes me a little closer to choosing something more dramatic. Funny you should say that about the stripe. It is the stripe that is recommended to go with that floral, but I didn't like it much either. I preferred a much different one with wider stripes and a brighter green. I just ran across a Mario B. quote about how to achieve the English look - something about getting the perfect mix of fabric and antiques and then locking 2 poodles in the room for a weekend. Comments (5)Welcome back deltabreeze, I remember your room. It is really coming together. I love your red lamps. I think the carpet tiles would look great in your room. I like a chair on either side of your fireplace. I agree with les about the round ottoman being used by the fireplace and the colors in the fabric she picked out are perfect - yellow and red. Not sure I would put an ottoman in front of the sofa, it will crowd the room. If you feel you must have something, I think it should be something the gives the room an open feeling - small oval table with thin legs? I just got an oval table for my family room and I was so surprised at how much smaller it appears in the room and how much larger the room feels. It is also easier to get up from the sofa without something square being there. Previously we had a wicker trunk for a coffee table and it seemed very bulky there. Comments (12)Jase- thank you I found and bought the Spray and Wash stick that has the name Resolve on the front. Hope that is the correct one. All, I used some unknown brand of stain stick (no label). I'm betting it was Spray and Wash since it was almost used up and deep in the back of the laundry closet and voila, no stains. I used it on both sides of the fabric added a lot of boiling water (2 gallons) to the machine, Oxi Clean and All Free with Whitener and let it soak for 3 hours. I then ran the wash cycle three times without changing the water for a total wash time of 39 minutes (Yep you read right my machine only has a 13 minute wash cycle). When I took it out, hung to dry and no more stains. I live in NYC and it is HOT, over 90 with high humidity the past week or so and anti-perspirant with anything (including aluminum) that works is absolutely mandatory, especially on the subway. In the winter I can get away with something less strong. Thank you for the suggestions. I love how everyone is so helpful. I love the challenge of saving a garment and all of you are so kind and generous with your knowledge. I hate clothes that look like I don't care. I forgot the buy the ammonia today but will pick some up tomorrow. I am forever spilling something on myself and want to have a little of everything to attack stains....See More

7 years ago:-) It looks great! Love the rugs, sofa, and chairs. I am so happy to hear that you are pleased with it. The fabrics are just right. The white paint and cabinets look really nice too. Did you vault the ceiling, or was it already that way? I think you need to show us more photos of the renovation!!
I think for the ottoman, you either need a dark solid or mini print, or maybe a paisley or floral for fun. A big windowpane plaid would be pretty too. These are all outdoor fabrics from Fabric Guru, so people could put their feet up, and they'd be easy to take care of--

7 years agoI love the woven olefin in fennel and the last plaid, there, jlc. What an eye you have!
I loved the texture of this fabric at Calico Corners, but it doesn't come in a good color. Maybe maybe I could swing the Citrine -- will go back and ask for a sample -- but probably not:
This is ok, but the color isn't exciting. Tufting with bronze buttons would give it some oomph.
And these vinyl ones. Easy to clean at least.
Now off to find that fennel fabric...
(The ceiling was already vaulted -- wish we could have planked it like aktillery's beautifully planked ceilings. But it turned out just fine with new drywall and BM Chantilly Lace in semi-gloss.)

7 years agoI love the plaid and check, but I fear it would get dirty with feet on it all the time.
I also love the "British" style tweeds, etc., and looked forever for a fabric in that style for my grandfather's chair. So hard to get in the US, and the stuff in the UK is too expensive.
However, I found this, and had a swatch sent to me. I ALMOST went with it. It's really beautiful. Good stuff, and relatively inexpensive.
From Barrow Industries. Their swatches are awesome, btw. Not this piddly 2 by 3 nonsense. They are big! and they send an envelope in which you can send them back, which is a great idea so they're re-used and not wasted.
