Report on winter damage - peach
Comments (24)I think a lot of it has to do with how much our temperatures can swing compared to other growing regions. I have always read how hardiness increases as the temperature decreases slowly. If it starts to warm up then the trees start to lose hardiness. On Jan 3rd I was 66f, then on the 6th we bottomed out at -12f. On Feb 6th we had -15f, but it had been over a week since we saw 50's. I think the freeze in Jan probably hurt more than the one in feb. Most places don't get swings like that. The guys in WI might get -20f without seeing too much damage, but it was probably a couple of weeks of 0-10 highs before that, and after it for that matter. My reliance and redhaven (20 trees) are either froze out completely, or later and not swelling yet. I have one Q-1-8 that has bud swell now. I haven't checked at the orchard further north. There was still snow on the ground there yesterday, so I doubt they are doing anything there yet....See MoreSnow Damaged Arborvitae
Comments (3)Well, a picture would help, but there are advantages to both approaches. Cutting the most splayed branches back would make them less prone to snow damage, but the more green you cut off, the harder it is on the plant. You never want to cut more than a third off any plant, and conifers may be even more sensitive. With as tough as this winter was on plants, I'd opt for the least amount of trimming this time around. tj...See MoreArborvitae had a tough winter !
Comments (4)Last fall I admired all the arborvitae in Maine, they grow like weeds up there. I was told you couldn't kill them. Not true! As long as you have a lot of rain and they are in full sun they do ok in area 6 but I really don't think they are meant for our climate. I have almost 100 of them in my yard here so I have my problems too. I hope the bottom of your trees fill out....See Moreremodel due to major water damage; need suggestion for kitchen
Comments (20)Aynb-- Exactly the same thing (major water damage to our kitchen) happened to me a year ago. I am so sorry you are having to deal with this. You are so lucky you found this site early in your process. I know your pain about living without a kitchen, but I just wanted to tell you that for us it was really, really worth dealing with the kitchen-in-the-garage situation so that we had enough time to make plans. Take some time to set up your temporary life with temporary kitchen (we used downstairs powder room for washing dishes, microwave meals, take out) so you can get your kitchen right! In the FAQ on this forum, there is a lot of really good advice about reconceiving your kitchen and planning well. The only things I regret about our remodel are things where I rushed or had decision fatigue from the fast pace of decisions. Good luck!...See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
