Help my peace lily? (Links to photos attached)
Comments (6)I agree with tisha: it does seem like kind of a big pot, considering that there are only about four individual plants in there. My instinct, which has been wrong before and which may be wrong now, would be to take it out of the pot, pull the pieces apart, shake off whatever soil and dead roots will shake off, and then repot the pieces together in the smallest pot that will hold them. (My guess from the picture is that it's in an 8" or 10" pot now; you should be able to fit the pieces that are still alive into a 5" or 6".) The leaves slowly dying a little bit at a time sounds to me like it's too wet, and I don't really see four plants going through that much water that quickly. It's not that you're watering too much -- drenching is good -- but I think you're probably watering too often. Which can be fixed. The light is probably fine. Fertilizer can cause dead tips and leaves, but if you're reading the directions and giving that amount or less when you feed, and letting water run through the pot when you water, that's probably not the problem. I doubt humidity is the issue either, though it can also cause dead tips. Let the plant tell you when it needs water. In a pot that size, the top couple inches can be dry while the bottom four are still wet, so you can't go by a schedule at all. Spathiphyllums that have gone too dry will collapse flat: that's too late. The right time to water is when the leaves go a little bit limp and floppy, where you can brush them with a hand and not feel much resistance. This is usually a few days before they go flat. In a large pot, it could be a long time between spells like this, depending on the time of year, amount of light, etc....See MoreEek! What is wrong with my poor peace lily?
Comments (4)Well, I have found that my peace lily likes a fair bit of water. I let it droop only very, very slightly and then water, but then it springs right back upright again. Brown edging on the leaves of a peace lily are caused either by too much water or not enough water. If you say you let it dry out enough to wilt, then it could be you're letting it wilt too much before watering. The one picture you posted there is rather severe wilt. Don't let it wilt even a third of that much. The leaves should only be showing a hint of a sag and then it's time to water. Make sure your pot has drainage and water just enough to have water come dribbling out the bottom holes of the pot, let it drain fully, and dump out the water from the bottom tray. It doesn't like to sit in water. Also, a peace lily does not want direct sunlight or really bright light. I actually have mine sitting in a corner away from the window and it blooms happily there. They say if the flowers turn green it is getting too much light. That said, it's not one for total darkness either. Off to the side of a north window is really good....See MoreWhat's wrong with my Peace Lily?
Comments (18)I wasn't able to view your photos from when you first posted, but was curious as to how your PL is doing now. I have gotten a lot of very helpful advice on this forum.I have a huge PL from grammas funneral two years ago, it seemed to be happy for a long time but lately I noticed it looking a little sick so I did some asking on here and now I ma happy to report it is coming back and looks really good. I water it with water that I let sit for a few days before using it, I keep it in front of a west facing window filtered by sheer curtains, I mist it or set in the bathroom and let shower run for 15 mins on hot then turn off the water and let it sit in there all day with the door closed, I check the soil regualrily so I can water when needed rather than when I think it should be watered, I repotted it in a size bigger pot, I diluted the fertilizer to 1/2 strength, all from advice I recieved here. All or some of the advice worked cuz the leaves all perked up, (they were very droopy, even the new ones)it has a lot of new growth, I don't see any more brown tips and it even has 3 flowers forming. I have a smaller one too that gets all of the same treatment as the big one, hopefully it will be a big one some day. Hope yours is doing well too....See MoreWhat's wrong with my peace lily?
Comments (7)I know it doesn't seem possible, but a 10" pot holds about 5X (4.8) as much soil a 6" pot, so be careful you're not over-potting. How I would treat the plant: First, I'd make sure I have a slightly larger pot ready to go with screens over the drain holes and a 1" layer of potting soil mixed 50/50 with perlite covering the bottom of the pot. I'm only recommending that soil mix for this application because it should be compatible with the soil the plant is in. I'd prefer something with more aeration that drains better than that, but you shouldn't use 2 soils that are significantly dissimilar in one container. I'd then use a utility knife with a fresh blade or a new single edged razor blade to cut 4 vertical slits 1" deep in the root mass from top to bottom, then I'd cut or tear off (with my hands) the bottom inch of the root mass, set the plant on the bed of soil, and fill in around the perimeter with fresh soil and water lightly. After a couple of waterings, I'd fill in again around the edges, making sure I don't add enough soil to cover the top of the original soil/root mass. Don't worry - your plant won't balk at this treatment. Alternately: you could just hold off until the plant starts telling you it wants to grow, (prolly around Easter) then divide it with a butcher knife or similar tool, pot the divisions, and share your largess.
