Mothers love vs Francis Meilland (MEIpikion vs MEItroni)

Hi there- I'm trying to decide whether to get one of these two Meillands....does anyone grow both, or either?

I've heard Francis Meilland can be stingy with the blooms. I don't know much about Mothers Love at all (though I've seen it potted at a shop- it looked nice and smelt pretty good) theres not much on HMF about it..

Main queries are regards heat tolerance and amount of flowers..and how happy it is to stay in a pot.

Curdle, I grew Mothers' Love in a pot for years and it was a really good rose, and very fragrant. Mine got morning and early afternoon sun, and the petals were thick enough that the flowers never fried. Mine didn't like being planted into a garden bed during water restrictions and promptly turned up its toes. I saw Francis Meilland (in a vase) at the Flower Show today. Pretty flower, nice scent, but have read the same posts about stinginess of bloom as you, apparently, so I'm sitting this one out. Have you tried Bionic Beauty? Melodye

oo looks like I will try mothers love then; Francis did look like he tended more towards the apricot side than I wanted as well as the possible non blooming issue. Non frying is always good :) I get a lot of reflected light (concrete + white weatherboard or galvanized steel outbuildings everywhere) so every time it goes over 29 C something gets fried.

I havent tried Bionic beauty- the name rings a bell, but try as I can, I cant seem to find a place that sells it! Sure I saw it on the Corporate roses site once upon a time, but looks like they just remodelled it and theres no list of roses like there used to be. They helpfully give a list of suppliers, none of whom seem to have it on this years lists either..strange, its not that old.

And Swanes have remodelled too- and they have gone design heavy and non searchable as well..grr

sunnishine - Francis Dubreuil was a "he", not a "she". He was the rose breeder that first hired Antoine Meilland (Papa Meilland) to work with roses when Antoine was just 16. Antoine ended up marrying Francis' only daughter, Claudia, making Francis the grandparent to the son of Antoine and Claudia, who was also named Francis. The younger Francis' other grandparent (Antoine Meilland's mother) was Grand'mÃ¨re Jenny, which also happens to be a lovely HT rose from 1950. Francis Meilland was the breeder of "Peace". I'm experimenting with these Zinnias this year. I never planted Zinnias before... These Zinnias are getting sun from sunrise (?) until 2pm then shade the rest of the day. I can tell you this much so far. I started them from seed in the house in mid April. I planted the seedlings outside in mid May. I carefully planted them because they do not like be transplanted. So I had them in cups with MG potting mix and I used a spoon to remove carefully from the cups trying not to disturb roots. 100% of them grew. Zinnias did not start blooming until very early July. And they are blooming more and more here in later July. I have not had to deadhead yet. First flowers in early July still look good. These are tall Zinnias (3ft) They do have smaller growing Zinnias too... But time will tell.... This post was edited by jim1961 on Mon, Jul 21, 14 at 10:57

Sharon: Thanks to your rose list, I remember how impressive that Easy Elegance which I bought at HomeDepot ... there was more blooms than leaves. The pot had large chunk composted pine-bark mixed with soil, well-drained. It also had Osmocote-like blue round tiny pellets mixed in. I suspect those blue-round-pellets have acid (sulfur) to neutralize alkaline tap. I once did a research on trace elements in chemical fertilizers, and Osmocote was the only one THAT DID NOT RESULT IN ANY NUTRIENT DEFICIENCY whatsoever. I didn't recommend Osmocote, since those brown granules didn't work on my herbs in pots. However, that type was discontinued, and there's improved formula in the Osmocote for flowers, NPK 14-14-14, it has a perfect rating on Amazon, can't find a negative review. I tested many chemicals vs. organics in pots. Organics work best for the ground, given microorganism and earthworms to break it down. Chemicals isn't best for clay soil, which retains salt well. Chemicals is instant-food, and work immediately in pots, or well-drained loamy soil. The danger of chemicals is salt-accumulation in pots, esp. with soluble fertilizer. After seeing those blue-round slow-released granules, and tons of blooms on Easy Elegance "Grandma's Blesisng" in a pot ... I'm sold on such, if I can find it. I'm going to test the perfect-rating Oscomote and compare that with organics for pots. I still remember how Sonia Rykiel gave me 15 blooms in a pot, fertilized with MG soluble, plus organics (alfalfa mixed in potting soil). The question is: Are oscomote pH-dependent? Does it require neutral tap, or acidic rain water to break down? The old brown Oscomote that was discontinued, it could not even dissolve in rain water !! I gave MG-soluble to Frederic Mistral in the ground, and he was still stingy. But when I brought the pH of my tap water down with sulfate of potash, plus trace elements in molasses, I got 40+ buds/blooms. My tap water is so alkaline, that MG soluble crystallized at the bottom ... It worked only when I put used lemon to help it dissolve. Below is Liv Tyler in my pH 7.7 clay, mulched with cocoa mulch at pH 5.4, plus horse manure (pH 8), and with rain water (pH 6):

Nice blueberries bushes Sam! he he on the good luck rocks...lol Straw, here's a pic of our largest and best D. Ko bush that we have in our yard. I planted it directly after I took out another rose that was in that spot for 30+ years. No ill effects at all...Only positive results in this case... If Thomas Affleck itself is capable of blooming well in that spot out front he will when he is ready. If not he will get replaced by a rose bush that will bloom better without having to change soil......(My grandpap god rest his soul would turn over in his grave if I ever changed our native soil for a rose bush or any other plant/shrub..) I can still here him saying for every plant that doesn't work there is one that will...lol... He would also say NEVER change your native soil unless you plan on veggie gardening the rest of your life...lol.. (Referring to our soil here).... Come to think of it I had Zinnias in Thomas Affleck spot last year. After seeing these Zinnia pics again and remembering we got the most compliments ever from them out front. Thomas Affleck will be surrounded next year by a few Marigolds but tons of Zinnias! A bit smaller ones though as we can't block the sun from Thomas...I'll get 2ft high Zinnias for the back and 15 inch Zinnias for the front...

Swiss Rose Garden nursery in WA have Bionic Beauty in stock according to their site, and I think they still mail order. Melvilles, who originally released it in 2007, don't, but their blurb says that if they have bud wood of any roses, they will custom bud. All on Fort. of course. Mine is a great survivor...the dog walked over it and flattened it; I moved it and forgot about it for a couple of years. Last year when I was weeding, I found this little stick with a big pale pink scented flower, and discovered it was BB. It has really responded to TLC...still small, but that is because I don't disbud it as I should...it keeps putting out flowers. I think I got mine on sale from Flower Power when they closed down here.

Swanes is like Swiss cheese...full of holes, Corporate is a dog's breakfast at present, considering rose buying season is coming up, and I refuse to sign up to Knights just to browse, never had to before.

I usually get my roses from Treloars, Mistydowns, and Thomas for Roses in Sth Aust. Sometimes I have found rarer roses at Reliable, or take a trip up to Silkies at Clonbinane. Another place I love is Spring Park roses at Eganstown (outside Daylesford). Nice garden to visit and a great range of perennials. Melodye
