Protecting Seedlings From Freezes
Comments (2)Judith, if you expect to have the weather warm up again after the freeze, you could put them in the greenhouse for now, then bring them back out. When it gets cold, eventually, you can decide what to do then. kay...See Moreoh... from bad to worse... hard freeze now expected
Comments (64)yup, thats a mango seedling treefrog, thanks. Im in the smack center of CA in Fresno. I live in the central valley where we get LONG dry summers (typically above 110 degrees) and cool, short, wet winters (Dec and half of Jan). So far, we've had a couple of frosty mornings, but nothing to hard to protect any plants. There is only a bit of damage to dypsis lutescens, majesty palm, hibiscus and bouganvillea. Temperatures begin to rise quickly begining this first week of January so there is minimal danger for any more damage than what is shown in the pics above....See MoreHard Freeze Forcasted for Monday Night
Comments (19)Wow, I figure if you're in SE CT you're in warmer zone than we are (we used to live in Salem/Niantic/Norwich 20yrs ago, didn't garden then). Sounds like we had about the same temps. Been dry here too - hope we get some rain today (well, I don't need it yet, but hope you get some). Hope your beets and turnips had minor damage to the leaves and recover. Lettuce is easy to replant. Our blueberries are budding like crazy, but looked OK (as far as I could tell) yesterday. Some of the stawberries don't look so good, but that's from all winter, not just this week. They're wild/alpine so we'll see how they fare. No flowers on those yet here thank goodness....See MoreBemoaning the hard hard freeze...
Comments (23)Here I think it was a blessing that while the trees and shrubs were starting to leaf out, they were not as advanced as yours probably were. Still, I think it was the duration of the cold that could hurt: it stayed cloudy and windy with flurries and around 30 -32 all weekend. Then dropped to 18F sunday night (though luckily I think my yard was around 25). Now it appears Mother nature really wants to make this all up to us. The one thing I did cover was my arctic beauty kiwi, as it was fairly leafed out. Saturday, in the cold and wind, I was planting cedars at my parents. I am hoping they come through the cold okay as they may have started to be in active growth (as they were likely shipped in from a warmer zone). You definitely work more efficiently and don't slack off when it's cold outside. When it's nice outside I plant one plant, take a minute break, do another, sit there and enjoy the sun, etc. Glen...See Moredigdirt2
