Air Frying - anyone doing that? have one?

saw one on qvc for about 90.00. looks nifty and useful for 1 or 2 people cooking. hsn has a few but the cheapest is about 130.00.

it sounds like it works a lot like the nuwave oven. I have one of those - free from my sister. never used it yet tho.

Has anyone used one? had food cooked in one? if so, how do you like it?

Not me Steph. I am not a kitchen gadget kind of person. I use my Hamilton Beach indoor grill thing daily and it is the newest kitchen gadget I have bought in years. Since my way of eating is 99% meat, I know GASP, My little HB grill is a dream for me. We do have an air popper popcorn machine for Joe. I can no longer have popcorn.

I saw the NuWave Ovens on Tv and have no desire for one of those either. My little grill is 7 minutes from start to finish and a steak is perfectly done. Wipe up with wet paper towel and call it good. The grill is a lot like a George Forman only it does have a timer on it.

I don't eat a lot of meat. the nuwave oven isn't something I'd buy. my sister gave it to me after her dh bought a new updated one. - fancier.

as with most things, she had no booklet of instructions with it. I've watched a few of those infomercials to try and figure it out but I seldom cook much worth pulling it out of the pantry and spending time to figure it out. it'd be hit and miss for me.

but the air fryer does have some good benefits to it and looks to be easy to use.

tuesday_2008......I'm learning a bit here on this post as well. :0) The red stool @ Big Lots is a painted finish on ceramic for $20. For $30 QVC looks to have a quality fired glaze piece that's on sale! I've also noticed ceramic pieces cost the same as porcelain....but the antique drum posted on this thread looks to be porcelain. Porcelain may hold it's value better. I have seen several stools show up at the ARC. Nothing I liked...but I'v also noticed the older stools are NOT a plain solid color. The solid colors or ones that are pierced are the LATEST look....the style changed just a little over time.

Do I need filter at return air vent if we have air cleaner in attic?

The only thing that I don't like is that the filter in the air cleaner is in the attic and not very accessible, so I don't do it myself. I would much rather be able to climb on a step ladder and unhook the ceiling grille to change the filter. Would it hurt if we put a filter there as well (like by restricting too much of the airflow) or help in any way? Would adding a filter there slow down the rate of how often we have to change the air cleaner one? (I think right now it is a once a year recommendation.)

So I got the air fry update last spring (GE Profile Twin Flex oven). I haven't experimented with it widely, but I was happy with the results with the things I've tried. It does do a better job at crisping than convection bake or roast, & no preheating is a nice convenience. It is not as fast as a countertop air fryer. In fact, the cooking times are more along regular baking times. But the advantage is in making family sized quantities. The first thing I tried was tater tots. I rarely bought them because I could never get them crunchy -- mushy tots are pointless -- but my husband had picked up a pack for the grandkids, so that was my test batch. They were great! Crispy & brown. It was hard to keep all the adults from eating the kids' tots, the memory of which makes me laugh a bit. Air fried "grilled" cheese sandwiches are excellent: melted cheese, crisp bread. It will be a great way to make Reubens or other grilled sandwiches. Air fried chicken thighs had a nice crisp skin & juicy meat. Looking forward to trying out salmon. Or experimenting with pork chops, which are tough to make without drying out the interior -- can I "flash air fry" them at high heat, short cooking time? A summer side dish that my guests have enjoyed are baby potatoes tossed in a little oil, garlic powder, & salt, air fried about 40 minutes. I tried an air fried ravioli appetizer. The idea has potential. I need to tweak the recipe for better results next time. Anyway, I can see that having the air fry option will be a nice tool to have in the cooking tool box. Looking forward to playing with it more when the cold weather arrives & shuts down our summer grilling.

I have baked and cooked in tons of different ovens over the years, and I find that convection makes a lot less difference than the marketing material would want you to believe. It is completely overshadowed by how evenly the oven heats. I found, some ovens need convection fans in order to heat evenly, whereas others will have hot spots when the fan is on. So, my guess is that people who love convection happen to have owned ovens that needed a fan to be even (e.g. my family's Bosch wall oven). And on the other hand, people who don't see the point in convection have owned ovens that generally do better without a fan (e.g. my Bluestar gas range). In the end, the quality of the oven makes the biggest difference, and that's really hard to tell from looking at the spec sheets alone. Having said that, there are features that can make a measurable difference. A oven that can hold a very steady and accurate temperature can be crucial for some dishes. This is particularly true at the low end of the temperature range (e.g. for proofing dough, making yoghurt, drying fruit, and sous-vide cooking, ...). And an oven that can set a precise humidity level can be really nice. That's why combination steam ovens are regularly called out as game changers. But that's a whole different beast from what you are asking for.

Hubby bought an air fryer last year. I think he used it twice -- maybe three times. For French fries. Now it's in the cabinet next to the toaster with the jumbo slots (hubby quit eating bread) and the toaster oven (hubby quit. . . Toasting stuff).

I seldom eat fries and they are fine in the oven to me. I seldom eat fried food anyway so maybe not the 'cooker' for me. tho, it looks handy and quick to use. probably better used with a family to cook for...

if my oven ever goes out I may look at one again - and the Breville counter oven. I don't need 1 more thing to store.

Really Steph. When I no longer have to cook for two all that kitchen stuff will be leaving ASAP. I will never leave my meat only way of eating because of health reasons and vegetables make me fat and hungry. HA I will probably turn my kitchen into my studio. The pantry will make nice storage for my glass stuff .All canned and boxed goods will be gone canning jars too. i will keep a large canning kettle to mix paint in and the rest of it will leave. I will have so much room in my cupboards. If company comes I will buy the foods i need for them and no more. But I do not expect much company since the only company that did come came to see hubby.
