People in this area say this is harmless and call it a coral. I think it looks like a fer de lance and really need to know. Can anyone help me? Thanks.

Looks like Dispas variegata, the Variegated Snail-Eating Snake, a common harmless species that "mimics" venomous pit vipers. These snakes have very slender bodies, even appearing emaciated, whereas the Fer-de-Lance is a much bulkier, stockier snake. The dorsal pattern on these can vary quite a bit, hence the species name. Look up "Black Headed Oriole", 8 inch long. Its the only North American Oriole with a black head and yellow body. The males are yellow and the females and young are oilve green. The young of both sexes aquire a black head in August, but the black wings and tail do not appear until the second fall. It is classed as uncommon and prefers dense woods and thickets. It is retiring and prefers to remain hidden. The song is soft low whistle.

Thanks, Diane, the kids are sure growing, aren't they? Makayla is now officially 3 inches shorter than me, and only 1/2 an inch shorter than my Mother. It's crazy, and Bud is going to be bigger than all of us, I think! Dcarch, I don't have an age cut off for trick or treaters, I figure you're never too old for free candy. (grin) Rusty, the brains are made with a silicone ice cube mold. I just melted some pink Wilton candy melts, smeared it up the sides of the mold, let it set, filled it up with cake, then smeared some more candy on top (bottom?) to seal it. Let it sit for a few minutes to get firm and pop it out of the silicone mold. Voila! Brains. The only problem is that the mold only makes 4, so you have to repeat the process as many times as it takes, so it gets a bit time consuming. Sharon, Makayla looks more like her mother all the time, it's always kind of surprising to me. Yes, things have changed a lot in the last 11 years or so, haven't they? Makes me kind of soppy too..... Heck, Ashley was only 14 then, now she's out of college, married, working, has two kids. Dad was still alive and so was the WonderWeiner. 1) The more you protest the more they will want to play the game. 2) it is certainly time to start discussing private areas. I started discussing what private means, and what not to do when DD was around 3. I kept the discussion very simple and straightforward. This is a private part. Don't show it to anyone except Mommy and Daddy or Doctor. Get anymore complicated than that and you will confuse them. Ask your pediatrician - they should have flyers on how to educate children. Mine did.

Ben, I think that you should try to describe this animal a little better. What was frog-like about the body? What color was the body? What size? You said it had a purple head, but called it discolored. Worms don't have legs......was this critter more like a caterpillar or a snake?

He really didn't have the copper color shown in the Caracolera picture- well he does but not as prominent as in the picture. But had none of the whitish color in the fer-de-lance picture. I did see some pictures of a Fer-de-lance that didn't have the white.

Some natives did say it was a 'what sounded like a ' Coral. They said it gets large. The head of this snake has a triangler shape and I don't see that is the caracolera pic.

I've seen Snail-Eaters in captivity, and they certainly do have a triangular head. Their coloration and patterning can vary quite a bit, too, which is how they got their scientific name.

Well this is very good to hear. I have also been told by someone here they have never heard of anyone being bitten by a poisonous snake in the last 20 years they have lived here. Thanks, Sharon for your input and help.
