You could try to line them up. Although you may not be happy with the look. But then again you could. Typically when adding a new section of flooring i use a transition piece. I run one board (depending on the door opening width) perpendicular to both floors. Its a nice break between the two and allows a diffenative difference between both sections. They also have rounded saddles or moldings that can be installed at the junction between the floors. Downside to that is they are not flush with the floor.

Could be almost anything. If you're going replace the thin slat florring anyway, then have at it and remove the stuff; you will then reveal what you have beneath it and be able to decide if it is worth restoring. I have done many restorations and there was only one floor that was DOA. Sounds as if your house has had lots of "remuddling" over the years; it's amazing what a DIYer with poor vision can do to nice architecture.

Okay, I think I see what you are getting at. I should be able to lay flooring into the doorway with ease and then maybe screw down a straightedge to the door frame (or pocket screw it in place) and route a perfect line. Then it would be alot of small adjustments, but I'd rather do that on one filler strip than every floor board. I should have said, the boards meet this doorway edge on, that is, the boards are the long part of the T and the doorway is the top of the T. Thanks. Anthony

wow, thanks for all the help! I can see that the different adjacent woods look good in your posted pictures only because they are quite differentn from each other, not sure that I want to go too light on the new wood because it would be to "blendy" with the white cabinets. A border is an interesting idea but my kitchen might be too small to be able to pull that off, I have an approx 10 x 13 U shaped kitchen with an adjacent 10 x 8 breakfast area. I appreciate the comments to consider that the lighting in the kitchen might be quite different from the hallway. That is true but I did not think of the hallway as being dark until we had the flooring changed and it surprised me how much darker it was after the flooring change. I'm going to find some dark brown tarps to put on the kitchen floor and see what that feels like. thank you!
