When to sow False Indigo seeds
Comments (9)I bought 2 False Indigo plants at the Home Depot this year. I have never had these plants before and was not familiar with them but knew them to be native to my area. They had purple/blue flowers on them and looked nice. However, after the flowers were spent, they formed seeds in fluffy pappus. Tiny seeds, not at all like the black leguminous seeds of the baptisia. When I took a closer look, I found that the flowers and seeds were on a separate stalk, apparently not part of the baptisia plant! Not knowing what it was, and not wanting it to self-seed, I pulled the flower stalks out. What remained are actually 2 very small baptisias. Now that I have learned that Baptisias don't bloom for a few years, I am thinking that these are very young plants and not yet blooming. The grower probably interplanted something, maybe an annual, with a flower stalk that would mimic the Baptisia so that they could deliver something to the nursery that would sell. So now I would like to identify the mystery plant - but all I have is the seed and pappus. If anyone had the same experience and knows what it is, and whether I should want to plant these seeds, I would appreciate hearing. Here's a photo of the seeds and pappus. The seeds are tiny - MUCH smaller than poppy seeds and more gray than black. The pappus is very downy. Do I want this plant or is it some nasty invasive I will regret for the rest of my life? Thanks for any thoughts....See MoreNEW: Incredible Edibles (Jan.) - Winter Sowing
Comments (133)Well, I mixed up another batch of mix last night to get ready to WS some more containers. I have 5 5qt ice cream pails man what I wouldn't do for some more of those. Some milk jugs whole and 1/2 gal Some soda bottles 2L and a few 3L and some 20 oz, although I am not sure I want to start seeds in those might just use them to pot up some things for a plant swap I am planning to hold in April or May. I got my mix sopping wet so I am gonna let it dry out a while before using it because I am gonna do some sowing inside before transfering them outside and I don't want to get water all over the house/floor. :) Fran...See MoreMNF February 2016 Swap
Comments (222)I received Shannon's package today in the mail. The side flap had torn loose and been taped shut, but most of it arrived safe and sound. The seeds were intact, as was a book of American documents and speeches, and an American flag patch I can sew onto my denim jacket. The Betsy Ross flag pole had snapped in half, but I think I'll use the flag in a quilt I've designed and partly sewn, so that's cool. The card was nice, and a necklace was missing, but maybe it'll be found by someone and put a smile on their face. Thank you Shannon!...See MoreStarting Tomatoes Season ... 2016
Comments (85)This is my first year trying to grow tomatoes with soil warming cable. Before that I always got very nervous during the night freeze and I took tomatoes inside and it was tiresome and not mind relaxing. This year I know that my plants have an internal heat source during the freezing temperatures and it supports them enough. My makeshift greenhouse is quite simple. The wooden frame 4X4 feet is actually the part of my compost bin. It will serve as compost bin after I will be done with tomatoes. I put some isolation inside, but I am not sure if it helps. Two 10 feet hoops, some agriborn row cover on top, the plastic sheet on top of the cover. I also put smaller hoops right inside the greenhouse and I put the additional layer of cover when the nights are freezing. My plan is to turn on soil warming cable when the night temperatures are lower then 40 degrees (which happened on the most days so far) and to open the plastic cover for the ventilation (but leave the agribon) if the outside temperatures are higher then 55-60. Eventually I am planning to leave agribon cover only when the temperatures are high enough. This year all of my veggies grow outside instead of the basement. Today we had 26 F in the morning and inside the greenhouse it was 39, it quickly got warmer when sun came up. The soil temperatures stay in 60s all the time....See Moresandyslopes z5 n. UT
