Winter sowing surprise! Purple Milkweed (Asclepias cordifolia)

While getting ready to winter sow various milkweed seeds, I came across an old packet of a few Purple Milkweed (Asclepias cordifolia) seeds. Since I had everything at hand to plant seeds, I decided, rather than throw the old seed out (they were purchased about 2009-10), I decided to try winter sowing the seed. So happy to report that I am getting germination. This is the first time I've ever gotten this seed to germinate so I'm thrilled. The first seed leaves look healthy so time will tell if they actually produce healthy plants and if so, whether they will even grow well here. But just to see some germination has been exciting.

Winter sowing has provided me such good experiences with native plants so if you have some seed that has given you trouble, consider saving them to winter sow this coming winter.
