I've never had these reseed for me here in Nebraska, but one of my favorite nurseries has seedlings for sale every spring -- they're usually about 8 inches tall and already with some blooms. I cut them back hard before I plant them, and they do great ... usually 3-4 feet tall by summer's end. There's nothing else that looks quite like them. I'm going to keep a closer eye out the next couple of weeks for volunteers, though. I've got to believe there will be some; i've probably accidentally hoed them up in the past. Dan

I'll admit I didn't do an extensive search (needed to get to work)! lol! I did notice that there was some green on some of the photos I saw as well, but I figured it would be a starting point at least. I also came across a lot of variation in flower structure, which is probably a bigger factor in a proper ID, since foliage color is more likely to vary in different conditions. Even when I put in A. cruentas 'Hopi Red Dye' or something else specific, more variation than I'm used to seeing when I do an image search. I also checked the USDA Plant Data Base and did a search for just "Amaranthus" and A. cruentas was listed as Common Name "Red Amaranth" so I'm pretty sure that at least the Genus and Species are correct. Now the cultivar... I'll let you know if I come up with anything else, as now I and 2 of my friends are on a tangent to figure it out so we can get some of this beautiful plant!!! ooooo Lisa I like yours too! I do like it with the Black-Eyed Susans...I wonder if I should let them re-seed in the prairie bed? Might be a lotta work thinning them out each spring, but might be well worth the color combo.Hmmmmmmmmm! That bed gets watered maybe once a month if that; they should stay rather short and not over shawdow the BES, Echinacea, Ratibida, Gaillardia ect. It probably would look good with the native grasses in there too :D Vera

Along the stems (under the colorful leaves), there are very small flowers. When these look dry, if you rub along the stems, the seeds will fall out. The seeds are small and black. I asked the same question last year, LOL. Becky
