pruning blackberry canes that are half brown, half green?

This is what get's to me every spring. It's easy to cut out the all black/brown canes, and leave the new all green ones. But the ones that are half brown half green, as in part of one side of a cane could be brown and the other side green, I never know what to do with these.. Are they the ones that will bear this year...they seem to be growing out new leaves and sections, but are getting very thin as the elongate and stretch out. They are usually solid green on the elongated parts.

And I don't remember which ones did bear this past year, do people mark those canes to remove all doubt nine months later?

Why didn't I cut them out immediately after they bore...because I'm a dufus, is there a better reason?
