Help needed: How to best pot large cactus arm in container

Hello all,

I recently was lucky enough to be given a large cactus arm that had broken off of a friend's huge plant in south Texas. It is a large columnar cactus, not sure the variety, but beautiful! As I mentioned, the arm broke off the other plant, it was not removed with a clean cut, but the wound is fully callused at this point. I'm including links to pictures at the bottom.

So, my questions are: How should I go about planting this in a container? Should I make a clean cut at the bottom and let it callus again to increase likelihood of rooting? Or will it root fine without this extra step?

I really don't want to lose this cactus!

Thanks for your help!
