Comments (6)I just caught a cheeky chestnut backed chickadee eating my lobelia flower buds. And when I went outside to chase him away, he just kept going to town, having himself a hey-day! Cute, but really? I wonder how long this has been going on, as it's the first time I've witnessed it. I put some seeds and peanuts in a dish for him to keep him happy and away from the new little buds. I hope this helps....See MoreMight this be volunteer Great Blue Lobelia?
Comments (17)Lynn, I'm quite impressed and happy to see your intersts in plants, and your willingness for new experiences. It's a plateau that many people never reach. The true enemy is people's plant blindness. The capitalists that are carving up the planet all have plant blindness. It seems to have spread to some garden people as well. Fleabanes are native and useful to pollinators, and to put it into context, I have maybe 1 erigeron vollunteer for every 300 dandelion vollunteers. Erigeron can be deadheaded if you feel you have too many. The flowers are lovely with the numerous petals. This is Erigeron pulchellus, Robin's Plantain. It gets only a foot high and it blooms much earlier than the 2 other local species anuus and philidelphicus. There are 2 Erigeron vollunteers near the bottom. I'm not sure which species they are, but I might leave one of them, since I'm going for a prairie/meadow effect. This is the only Blue Lobelia plant that I've found this year. It came back from last year. I had 6 Great Blue Lobelia in this bed last year. I crushed all the seed pods and scattered them in this bed, but I'm only seeing 1 plant this year, despite the heavy sowing. They hang around, sonetimes by a week thread. Next year I could have several plants? Unfortunately blue Lobelia isn't rhizomatous like some of it's relatives in the BELLFLOWER, CAMPANULA family Lol. I grow Lobelia kalmii in a bog pot. The flowers are similar to GBL. I have seedlings of Lobelia puberula which also likes wet conditions. I have not had success wintering over Cardinal Flower, Lobelia cardinalis. I've also tried growing Indian Tobacco, Lobelia inflata, and Spiked Lobelia, Lobelia spicata, with no success, but I'm stoked that I was able to get flowering Lobelia kalmii. Lobelia is a large genus that is global and the unusual and beautiful Lobelia species in Hawaii and alpine Africa are magnificent. Lobelia kalmii This is Campanulastrum americanum, Tall Belflower. It's a cousin of GBL. It has a much better self seedling count than GBL. All around much easier to grow. Last years Lobelia sifilitica....See MoreLobelia siphilitica? S.E. MI z5
