I use an indoor/outdoor rug inside my entry. I like to have a big one - I think it's nearly 4 x 6, so that if it's raining/snowing/etc, my kids and their friends have enough room to step around the swing of the door w/o stepping onto the hardwood floor and can easily remove their shoes on the rug and leave them there to dry. I can't remember where I bought my last one, but I need to replace it (my recently deceased dog peed on it and I can't get the smell out). There are many that are decorative - Ballard Designs, Home Decorators and Overstock all carry them. I love them because you can literally take them outside and rinse them off if they get muddy. They aren't plush, but they do have pretty designs so they look nice. I just use a rug pad/grip underneath it. I suppose it's all up to you how decorative you want it to be. The one I'm getting matches my decor perfectly and does not look like an outdoor rug but certainly not as nice/fancy as an Oriental rug. If you have concerns about cleaning the rug given the winter climate in Chicago, you might not want to get anything that requires expensive cleaning.

Where is the table . I hope not in the DR. As for chandelier IMO not really something needed over a bar table. I think we need more info.

While I think a 42” hood over a 36” cooktop is the ideal, it is not absolutely essential IMO. Understandably, many many homes cannot fit the additional 6” width above the cooktop. However, what IS essential—and what you should spend your time and money on—are: (1) a correctly-sized duct to the outside - it needs to be 8” diameter, not smaller; (2) hood depth front-to-back of ideally 24”, but if that is too costly, then no less than 22” front-to-back; (3) baffle filters, not mesh filters, and (4) canopy-shaped hood, NOT one of those flat ones, and not glass, no matter how cool looking they are. There is no point in spending all that money on a kitchen hood, only to have it not be functional because you did not follow the above-listed advice.

I agree that roses are a mixed bag as far as pruning, depending on the habit of the rose and also how well it tolerates cold if you're in a cold climate. Some of my roses I'm forced to prune because of cold damage, and some of them don't need a single inch taken off. Gardeners have different styles too, of course, a lot of my collection are ramblers or fountaining shrubs that I chose specifically because I wanted them to have a certain natural shape that did not need my coaxing to acheive. It's a messier, more natural look that not everyone likes but I'm not the formal type. But certainly not all roses need pruning and they don't just grow indefinitely unless you prune them. That said, my Moonlight in Paris never exceeded 3.5' tall and maybe 2.5' wide by the end of the season. It did need pruning each spring from cold damage.
